Keto Resources

The following are the resources that I've shared when it comes to my Keto Diet Journey.

IMPORTANT: I HAVE NEVER RECOMMENDED A KETO DIET TO ANYONE!

Before I begin, I feel it is important to tell you that I am not a medical professional.  I am not making a "recommendation" that anyone pursue the Keto diet/lifestyle. However, with that said, I am very much committed to the Keto Lifestyle, personally.  As a result, a number of people have asked me to share the resources that I have used along my journey.  Since I am asked about these resources so frequently, I've decided to share them here on this resources page. I encourage you to do your own research about any pros and cons to the Keto Lifestyle. You may want to seek the wisdom of a medical professional and come to your own conclusions about what is the best decision for yourself when it comes to the Ketogenic Diet. However, just because I may be committed to the Keto Lifestyle, and it is working out quite well for me, I am not qualified to tell you how such a lifestyle will impact your own health.

What is the Ketogenic Diet?
To learn what Keto is all about, I recommend you watch all of the videos in this YouTube video playlist from Dr. Eric Berg.

Why Did I Decide To Try Keto?
I had heard about and researched the Keto Diet for more than a year and never felt compelled to fully commit to it until I officially started my Keto journey on Monday, May 6th, 2019. My friend, Michael Hyatt, personally recommended that I try it out. He shared a great article he wrote about his own experience called A Beginner's Guide To Keto. Initially, I did not want to make a commitment to a Ketogenic Diet because I had effectively dropped from 272 pounds down to 181 pounds without Keto and I was still able to occasionally enjoy potato chips, french fries and several other carbohydrates that I loved. However, the more I looked into the Ketogenic Diet, I found that I was more interested in the health benefits of Keto than the weight loss benefits.

The Keto Calculator
I initially thought that Keto was a low carb/high protein diet.  However, I was wrong.  I found out that it is a low carb/high fat/moderate protein diet.  This is actually very important.  Once I learned about the importance of getting enough fat into my diet (Healthy Fats), I wanted to know how many grams of carbohydrates, protein and fat should I consume if I wanted to continue my weight loss journey? There are many online websites devoted to helping you find this answer. My research lead me to this Online Keto Calculator that I found the most helpful.

Testing Ketone Levels
If I'm going to go through the effort to change my eating lifestyle to get into a state of Ketosis, I want to know when I am actually achieving my goal.  More importantly, I want to know how certain foods, drinks and supplements I consume affect my level of ketosis. My research has shown that Keto Breath Monitors and Urine Test Strips are not effective for the type of quality test results that I prefer.  Testing your blood for Ketone levels is the only way to go.  Below is the Ketone Blood Test Unit that I use from Keto Mojo.  I've also shared the links for additional Ketone Test Strips and Lancets.

Occasionally Testing Blood Glucose Levels
My Keto Mojo device (linked above) came with 10 blood glucose testing strips. I've found that there is value in also, occasionally, testing blood glucose levels before and after some of the foods that I eat to see how they are impacting my blood sugar levels.  Since the testing device also allows you to test blood glucose levels, I went ahead and ordered additional Blood Glucose Testing Strips For The Keto Mojo (Affiliate Link).

Supplements That I'm Taking
Many people experience a few symptoms when they are starting on the Ketogenic Diet. Most of these are caused by deficiencies in electrolytes. In particular, on the Keto Diet, you will need to increase the amount of sodium, potassium and magnesium that you consume.  I'm personally drinking at least one cup of chicken broth per day for additional sodium, I drink three separate servings of Keto K1000 Electrolyte Powder (Affiliate Link) mixed with 16oz of water. And I'm also taking a standard, over the counter, magnesium supplement.  I am also taking a Nutritional Yeast Supplement  (Affiliate Link).  The reason I chose to take nutritional yeast are due to the 7 benefits of doing so as described in this video from Dr. Eric Berg.

Important Note About Kidney Stones
I have had a history of kidney stones in my past.  These things are no fun at all. In my research, I learned that when you are on a Ketogenic diet, you release a higher amount of calcium in the urine. That, in combination with oxalates from foods such as Avocado, Spinach and many other cruciferous foods, can cause the formation of kidney stones.  I was already drinking water with squeezed lemon juice on a daily basis.  However, I've increased my intake of lemon juice that I consume on a daily basis. I drink the juice of 1/2 to 1 whole lemon per day in the water that I drink.  For more insight on Kidney Stones topic, watch this video and this video.

The Audio Journal
I have a premium podcast that I do called The Audio Journal. For my Audio Journal Subscribers, I have been sharing Keto Focused Episodes where I share what I am learning and personally experiencing as a result of pursuing a Ketogenic Lifestyle.  My first eight days on Keto are documented in episode 045, episode 046, episode 047, episode 048 and episode 050. I plan to continue giving period Keto Updates in The Audio Journal moving forward.

Audio/Video Gear

This section is under development. I've simply created a few quick links for folks who have been waiting for a list of audio/video gear that I use.

Audio Gear

The most valuable piece of audio gear that I am currently using is the Rodecaster Pro (Affiliate Link). I love this device so much that I purchased two of them. One is for permanent setup in my studio and one I plan to take with me on the road whenever I want to record audio away from the studio.
