The Strangest Secret
I must have heard my great friend, Dan Miller, talk about The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale at least 30 to 40 times before actually searching out this resource for myself. I’m so glad that I did! When I first heard it, I do recall telling myself that I wanted to actually go through and listen to this at a minimum of once a year, if not more often than that.

The Strangest Secret was originally released as an audio production (78 RPM Record) in 1956. Without any advertising or formal marketing, over a million albums were sold and it became the first (and only) spoken word message to win a Gold Record.

What Is Success?
Earl Nightingale shared a definition of success that I have chosen to adopt myself. He says that “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal. If a man is working towards a predetermined goal and knows where he is going, that man is a success. If he’s not doing that, he’s a failure. Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.”

When asked who is successful, Nightingale would have said that a anyone who is doing deliberately a predetermined job because that’s what he decided to do deliberately, would be considered a success.

I love that this definition of success does not depend on financial status but instead that you are living a life toward a definite purpose. I especially love how, in his talk, he gave an example of a school teacher and a stay-at-home wife/mother as fitting the definition of success, if they are doing those things because that is what they WANTED TO DO.

There is so much more wisdom and inspiration to be found within this resource. I highly recommend that you check out this inspirational message for yourself. You can purchase the physical book for less than $8, the Kindle version is less than $4, and an .mp3 audio version is less than a buck.

My Best Podcast Episode Ever
Out of all the podcast episodes that I have produced since December 2005, there is one, by far, that is my favorite episode recorded to date. In my EOTC Podcast Episode 131, I share an hour long conversation that I had with Steve Brown from Key Life Ministries. In this episode, I share a few reasons why this was my favorite episode.

Social Media Update
In this episode, Erik Fisher and I talk about a few of our recent thoughts about Twitter. In our conversation, we discuss the following topics.

- Twitter cuts off some functionality to Instagram.
- My favorite feature in Tweetbot.
- Disabling Official Retweets.
- When to Official Retweet and when not to Official Retweet.
- Why Erik is looking for a Tweetbot only Twitter eco system.
- Why I will continue to use the Twitter’s website when on the computer.

Voice Mail Options
As you know, I am a huge fan of including the voice of my audience in my various podcasts. I am often asked what service I use to obtain the voicemails that I include from my audience. I’m happy to announce that I’ve recently updated my post on this topic at http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/voicemail.

SpeakPipe is a new addition to the services that I recommend. In the episode, I explain some of the functionality of SpeakPipe and how I’m currently implementing it by using a custom feedback page at http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/feedback.

Webinar Recording Question
Ben called in to ask about how I go about recording 20 minute segments for during my webinars so that it makes for easier post production when creating the video versions that I make available as digital products. I share my answer to this in the episode.

The Teenager Podcast Dilemma
Ryan called in to say that he and the co-host for his podcast are both teenagers. He is concerned that adults may immediately turn off their podcast upon learning that they are only teenagers and wanted to know if there is anything that they could do to keep this from happening. I share my thoughts about this in the episode.

@Greg Allen @Cliff Ravenscraft I checked out the noise removal filter for both Adobe Audition & Audacity and I must say that I am not a "fan" of it either. I'm going to get rid of the computer fan noise and i'm getting a dynamic mic soon. Thanks Cliff & Gregg!

BTW: Absolutely loving SpeakPipe and The Strangest Secret is just amazing! Thanks again Cliff!!! :D

@Benscarts thanks, I actually went with my Heil and Audition recording because the speak pipe sounded like a water pipe.

@Cliff Ravenscraft  Cliff, we don't do any filtering or cleaning of a voice message. Recording is performed in a browser so we don't have any tools for an audio processing there. I want to point out that sound quality depends on user's skills to work with a microphone and quality of their microphone. Unfortunately, we didn't find the solution to produce good quality from a problematic messages. We would appreciate any suggestions you have on how we can improve.

We show a warning if user's recording was too loud or too silent but some users just don't know how to fix a problem with their microphone and skip this warning.

Are there any filters which we can apply to each message in order to improve quality of it?

@SpeakPipe Very loud computer hum. and a bit over-modulated.  Not all the messages that I receive are like this.  Just this one.

If this were just a question for my podcast, I'd be more than happy to play it.  However, there is no way, not in a million years, that I would allow an audio testimonial for someone who has just taken my Podcasting A to Z course to sound like that.

Thankfully, I have the written version of that testimonial which is what I will use. :)

@JamesFestini  Hi James. I think there is some problem in Flash Player configuration on your current setup. Could you please send us a voice message on http://www.speakpipe.com/ so we can detect why it sounded like a water pipe? Or you can contact us at support@speakpipe.com with any details.

    Thanks for your feedback!

@Benscarts  @JamesFestini Ben, James is saying that he played back the audio of what his computer recorded with Speakpipe and he was not happy with the audio quality of the recording.

He's just saying that he's going to record his feedback with his podcast gear and email an .mp3 file instead. ;)

@JamesFestini Not sure I understand.  I couldn't begin to take all the feedback live via my equipment.  I use Speakpipe to handle those calls 24/hrs a day.  Now, interviews I use the the equipment for the best quality.

Cliff -- Thanks for mentioning my new show on the podcast.  Bottom line for anyone wanting to launch is take the A to Z Course!  Great information.  Now I just need to pump out the content!  And your content as usual is great - The Strangest Secret is great stuff.  Enjoyed your perspective.

Hi Cliff, I ended up on your blog while looking for some new recording equipment and noticed that you'll be at the CNMC this year. I'm the owner of aquinasandmore.com and we'll have a booth at the Catholic Marketing Network portion of the conference and we are a sponsor of the CNMC. I was looking for equipment because I'm going to be starting a weekly radio show on the Catholic radio station in CO and NE. I'll be back for more tips about making my show a success.

@IanRutherford Ian, I'm not sure why, but this comment got caught in my spam filter and I am only just seeing this today.  I so wish I would have seen it before my trip to Texas. Would have loved to have made a point to meet with you.

I wish you great success for your radio show!

@Cliff Ravenscraft  @IanRutherford Hi Cliff, I figured the comment violated a policy I missed but I actually did meet you on the last day of the show. I thanked you for recommending the R-05 and mentioned that I had forgotten to get a larger memory card because the included one filled up in the middle of an interview.

Thanks for the great keynote and the comfort to talk in a room where you were the "only non-Catholic".

@IanRutherford Ah yes, I remember that conversation with you.  I remember telling to you to make sure you always record into WAV format. ;)

As for the spam thing.  There is an ability for others to "flag" comments as spam and I think there are a few members of my community who are a little overly sensitive when it comes to what they choose to flag.

Well I am glad that we did get  a chance to connect.  Though I would have loved to have been able to stop by your booth to see had going on there.

Thanks, @Cliff Ravenscraft , for another great episode.  I loved listening to the Earl Nightingale segment.  I've listened to a couple of his recordings: I used to check them out of the library when I first discovered personal development.  I loved that you emphasized defining our purpose for our blogs and pod casts: it makes such a difference.

Hey @Cliff Ravenscraft, Its Ryan, thank you for answering my question on your show. You showed me that as long as my co-host and I are confident and believe that were bringing valuable content to the table along with trying our best to improve our show, we will be just fine. I have spoken to some of our listeners and it turns out that most of the people who listen to our podcast are not teens but actually young adults in there early twenties, which quite frankly surprised us.  You also spoke about post production with your podcast, which is pretty funny cause I do the same thing on my show. I take out the odd stutter and take out the word I constantly use "that's true". It drives me and my co-host crazy when I use it although I am starting to say it a lot less then I used to.  Something you also remarked about was the computer fan noise in the background. I use a condenser mic (but I will be switching to dynamic eventually) and in my actual podcast, it hardly shows up on the recording but even the slight noise irritates  me. I am using a very old, un upgradable, really slow, computer but I will be upgrading to a new computer this September with a quite fan. hope this comment was not to long but thanks again for your advice Cliff.

@Ryan Clarke  @Cliff Ravenscraft Keep it up Ryan! Just the short clip I listened to on Cliff podcast sounded great! You articulate yourself well and this i important. If you are using Audacity as your software go to the effects tab, noise removal, that brings up a box. click get noise profile, then highlight a couple seconds of the track that that just contains the back ground noise then highlight the track and go back to the same menu and instead of clicking get noise profile hit OK. That will remove the fan and any other background noises you highlighted. You may have to play with it a bit...

    Cliff Ravenscraft
    Cliff Ravenscraft moderator

@Greg Allen  @Ryan Clarke I've never been a fan of the noise removal filter (Pun Intended). ;)

I find that it takes out too many frequencies needed for the rest of the audio and it warps the sound of the file.   Personally, I prefer to eliminate the noise before it ever gets recorded. ;)

Thanks for sharing about the Strangest Secret. I have the podcast and listen to it regularly as well. It's funny that I heard Dan Miller mention it numerous times before I finally gave it a try. It's an amazing audio. I've applied it to a number of areas in my life and have found it very beneficial. I haven't heard your podcast on this topic yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Thanks.

Hey Cliff! I purchased the The Strange Secret through your link... I must say that it is the best 89 cents I have ever spent. I spent 20 years in a job I didn't like (okay loathed) and now working towards a career I am passionate about. To bad I wasn't inspired like that years ago. It was another great show by the way. I find myself looking forward to Thursdays. :-)
