Equipment Options For Under $200
My primary focus with Podcast Answer Man is to help people create amazing sounding and extremely well produced shows. However, I am often asked what is available to those who want to record their audio on a very limited budget. In this episode, Steve called in to ask what the minimum requirements were to record a podcast and what I would recommend if someone had $199 to put toward equipment purchases.

In the episode, I explain that there are a large number of options out there. However, I chose to focus on six options. Have a listen to hear my full explanation of each of the following:

- Option 1: Any Telephone using a service like TalkShoe.com.
- Option 2: Built In Microphone
- Option 3: Smart phone with recording app like Griffin’s iTalk.
- Option 4: A USB Headset.
- Option 5: The Shure X2U SM58 Combo.
- Option 6: The Roland R-05. See Podcast Answer Man Episode 228

What file format should I use for my podcast?
Technically, an audio podcast can be made up of any digital audio file, regardless of which file format you use, that is made available through an rss feed. Trinity called in to say that she has been producing an audio podcast where some folks are complaining that they are unable to play the episodes on their media player of choice. In the episode, I explain why I feel that every audio podcaster should be producing their show as an .mp3 audio file.

What do I need to bring multiple guests and audio clips into my show?
Every day, I get emails that contain the phrase “quick question.” One of the reasons that I produce this show each week is to answer the more frequently asked questions so that I can have a resource to point people to when the same question comes up again in the future.

Kelsey originally wrote me such an email and I asked if he would be willing to call in the question so that I could answer it in the show. He wants to create a variety show with a cohost and wants to also be able to bring a 3rd party on, as a guest, and wants to be able to play audio clips so that all three of them can hear each other and the audio clips, and have all of the above recorded.

He asked if it was possible to do all of this simply using hardware on a single computer. If not, he wanted to know a list of equipment that he might need to pull this off.

During my answer, I referred to this PDF Diagram.

This type of question typically takes a bit more of a one on one approach. It is best answered with the use of visual aide, via screen sharing, and getting feedback from the other person to make sure they are following along.

I’d like to think that I would get an A for effort for attempting to answer this question via an audio podcast. However, by the end, I was almost certain that I’d got a bit too technical and that what I was explaining may simply be too much to answer via an audio response. Have a listen and let me know what you think about the answer I gave in the comments section below.

Cliff - I am making my way through your podcasts as I am "a few weeks new" to your community so I am commenting on this post months later. I wanted to share with you, since you asked, that I found your diagram and the explanation very helpful. I am a visual person and I was able to follow along partially because I am a techie and partially because I purchased your Cyber Monday deal for all of your products and I've already watched the hardware videos. Ha!

I have already purchased most of the equipment and software you use and I've contacted Jenny for my artwork. My goal is to launch my podcast in January. I feel a kinship to you -- I love helping people figure out what they are capable of.

Take care, Amy

Thank you Cliff.

I just upgraded to the paid version of the iTalk app so I can leave feedback easily along with just any easy way to record my thoughts and while recording it forces me to put some clarity into them for myself.

K, bye

Thank you so very much, @Cliff Ravenscraft , for being so kind to answer my question.  The perfectionist in me wants to produce the best audio possible, but like your journey back in history, I have to start somewhere and bootstrap my way up.  I'm in the same league with @masonworld 's nephew :)

Quick question: if you were going to recommend #5 or #6 in the budget resources, which would you recommend over the other?

@SteveBorgman  Personally, I'd always chose the digital audio recorder.  It and my Heil PR-40 are my two favorite pieces of equipment. ;)

Haha, some great stuff here as always...not sure about the lengthy skype tutorial though. Next up you'll be teaching us how to build a nuclear sub over the radio? :) Ken

@KenBurgin Thanks for the feedback.  I shared my thoughts on my decision to include that question in the opening of 274. ;)

Hi Cliff,

I really enjoy your show and  have found it very very helpful with the podcast that I'm about to launch (first episode recorded, will be live on the 23rd)

I wanted to add my $0.02 here about the segment about recording with multiple remote hosts/guests

To be honest, I listened to the first chunk of it and then skipped to the end of it - but for a different reason then I suspect many people do - My background is as a professional audio engineer  who uses those really large consoles you were talking about on a regular basis.  I also do a fair amount of teaching audio.

What I wanted to say is that what you tried to do is REALY HARD - particularly to do in audio (even with an accompanying document)

I would like to offer encouragement to anyone who DOES want to understand this - if you do it long enough it becomes intuitive. It really does.  With my experience, as soon as you played the question, I knew essentially what the answer was going to be - it's just natural (after having spent a sufficient amount of time beating my head against it in years past...)

So, what's my suggestion for these sorts of questions going forward?

I think trying to tackle something so complex with so many pieces in one call is REALY hard, and probably not really useful.  But as these kinds of things come up, pulling out individual tech topics might be useful...  For instance to just talk about what a mix minus is and how to set one up - that probably is a manageable chunk of information.

And BTW - the same thing applies to learning the "big" mixers like you see at major concerts.  It's mostly just more of the same stuff - maybe 12 aux sends rather then 2 - but the idea is still the same.

I hope this is helpful, and thanks for a great show!

@Acdolph Thanks for the feedback Andy.  I think in the future I'll leave such responses to video tutorials.  ;)

@Cliff Ravenscraft Cliff, because your podcast is produced in a improvisational style (which I like) I really don't have expectations that you deliver a big media type of production. As always... some show are gonna ROCK and some are NOT! No biggie because your Crush-it to Not Ratio is still 99% to 1%.

Cliff, Black Cat Systems also has Sound Byte in an iPad app, then you may not have to get a second sound card.  It is actually kind of cool, because you just have to touch the "carts" instead of clicking on them.

@Scott Hamilton Their iPad app is pretty decent.  I do notice about a half a second delay from when I actually tap the button until the clips start to play.  But other than that, it is wonderful!

Cliff,

I really enjoyed the episode. I thought your answer about podcasting under $200 was great. I particularly liked the part about mixing 2 Skype callers. I am starting the Revolution Fan Podcast in the next month or so, and am planning on having 2 Skype callers. I bought the 2nd soundcard (I got a Soundblaster). I still have to test it with the Skype callers with the mix-minus. It was good hearing you go through all the steps so it is clear in my mind again. I have the Mackie 1202-VLZ3 so I have the 2 aux outs. (I also am trying to route everyone through the Behringer compressor/limiter/gate as well.)

It is detailed and geeky but it really is the correct information for people that need it.

Here is the feedback that I had assumed would come in as a result of this episode.  The following came in via email.

[Begin Quote]

Hi Cliff,

Let me start this by saying I am a huge fan, your show is the number 1 podcast on my listening list, and it was one of my high points at BlogWorld that I was able to meet you (and attend your seminar).

That being said, I listen to your show from start to finish every week (and often replay segments a second and third time), but your most recent episode (#273) was the first time ever that I turned off a show before it finished.

It went downhill for me when you answered the question from Kelsey, (to me) your answer seemed long, overly specific, and hard to follow, and it was the first time you seemed unprepared, often giving information and links then correcting yourself, which made it even that much harder to follow along.

Please understand this is being offered as constructive criticism, not as an effort to be negative.

Thank you for your show, I will continue to be a huge fan.

[End Quote]

I could not agree more with this feedback and I actually even shared this during the final four minutes of the episode.  It means a lot to me to know that I was right to assume that I would have had people stop listening at that point.

Heck, there was a point in my answer to Kelsey that I simply wanted to stop talking. :)

@Michael Stelzner Thanks Michael. It is my honor to promote your show.  I'm looking forward to the results of what your show will do in introducing even more business and blogging people to the world of podcasting.  I imagine that there could be a thousand or more new podcasts within the next 6 to 12 months as a result of your show. ;)
