Are You Creating Life Changing Content?
This week, I was reminded, once again, why it is that I produce this show and create the content that I make available here on this site. That reminder came from an email that I had received from John Bukenas who wrote an email to me that started with… “Cliff, You know when you see something that is life changing? That happen to me today. It was finding your site.”

John not only agreed to allow me to use his email in my show this week, he actually made an audio recording that I could play in the episode. John’s email inspired me to remind everyone just how valuable of an opportunity that we have to positively influence the lives of others each time we hit the record button or publish new content to our website.

I’ve often given folks the assignment of making a list of 50 members of their audience, listing the first name, last name, email address, and a minimum of two other personal details about each of those fifty people. I imagine the crazy things that some of these folks think about me when I give them this assignment.

I have found that when you are creating valuable content that has the potential to positively influence the lives of others, you’ll find people who will go out of their way to provide you with these personal details. John’s introduction to me was a perfect example of this principle in action. I’m so delighted that he has allowed me to share it with you.

I encourage everyone to create content that is entertaining, educational, encouraging, and inspirational. This type of content has the power to be “Life Changing.” I don’t spend as much time thinking about “Traffic Generation” or the best “SEO Strategies” as many think that I should. Instead, I attempt to create content that is valuable and I invest a great deal of time in getting to know those who are already aware of my brand.

Apple Wins Patent For Supporting Podcasting
There is a lot of buzz going on, within the podcasting community, about the fact that Apple has been approved for United States Patent 8,245,924. The concern is wether or not this patent will hinder other major companies from creating systems for supporting and managing podcast subscriptions.

To me, it seems as though Apple filed this patent application back in 2006 and it appears to have been done to keep others from making a clone copy of Apple’s method of managing podcast subscriptions through its iTunes software. However, this patent could prevent other major players from supporting podcasting for fear of legal action from Apple. I plan to keep a close eye on this story.

Is Twitter Going Downhill
In this week’s Social Media Segment, Erik Fisher and I discuss how Twitter is cutting off access to its data from more third party services. We have reported in the past that LinkedIn had made a change that would no longer allow you to automatically post your tweets as status updates within LinkedIN. We have on the fact that Instagram was no longer able to allow its users to find their friends from Twitter, who also use Instagram. This week, we learned that Tumblr was also cut off from allowing you to find out which of your friends, from Twitter, were also using their service.

The above announcements really didn’t worry me too much. However, I began to get a little concern when I started to read stories about how Twitter seems to have plans to cut down their API access to third party clients. You can read about some of the changes in this Mashable article. I’ve been a huge fan and supporter of Twitter since 2007. With these recent changes, I must say that my loyalty to their brand is not as strong today as it once was.

I haven’t yet made the decision yet. However, I’m seriously considering checking out the App.net alternative to Twitter. The developers of App.net raised well over $600,000 through its own crowdfunding campaign. Their mission is to build a “real-time social service where users and developers come first, not advertisers.”

I totally support the idea of an open, ad-free network funded by users. I’m happy to be one of those paying users. However, as I shared in this episode, I’m 100% convinced that there needs to be a free version of the service for those who simply aren’t yet ready to pay to go pro on the network. One of the things that I’ve always liked about Twitter over Facebook was it’s low barrier to entry.

What about you? Are you a paying member of the App.net community? Let me know in the comments section below.

Erik’s New Podcast
This week’s personal plug of the week is a little unique. Our very own Erik J. Cliff, I checked out JOIN.APP.NET. Doesn't really appeal to me. Until the Twitter issue becomes a limiting factor in my platform building efforts, I'm gonna stay where the followers are. I did notice a change with my Hootsuite account. For some reason now, I can only tweet ONCE per day on Hootsuite. I am checking into that now, but that stinks! Thanks for your great work, my friend.

@BrianHolmesLive Thanks for the feedback.  I agree with your assessment.  With all these changes they have made, I'm certainly less loyal to Twitter than I once was.  I post less, I've unlinked my Twitter and Facebook accounts, and I have begun to focus more on engagement with Facebook as a result.

I still use Twitter.  I still love Twitter.  Just a little less than I used to. ;)

Cliff - Thanks for another great show.  And thanks to you and John for sharing John's story.  I look forward to eventually hearing John's show and the "rest of the story."  Congrats to Cliff on continuing to inspire!

Loved the Podcast Cliff, but also wondering if the third Party integration issue with Twitter will affect Buffer?  Does anyone know? @ErikJFisher

@Peder Aadahl Very interesting thought. I think it may effect them, but, they are not just a Twitter client. I'll be interested in hearing from them. I am going to ask them.

Thank you Cliff and Erik on the Twitter API downlow.

That was awesome to hear that testimonial Cliff. I used the example you gave about not always having the amount of followers you want to a friend of mine regarding the attendance at the young adults group at our church.

K, bye

Cliff - Thank you for this episode!  I'm one of those guys who believes that, unless my podcast/blog isn't reaching thousands, it's a failure.  I need to remember that every listener/reader counts.

@MichaelGruener Michael, If I was able to reach ONLY YOU with this message, then the hours I spent producing it would have been worth the investment. ;)  Thank you for the feedback!

A shameless plug - I like it! :)

I'm on the fence about the Twitter changes - if it's being done to get some control over  the Twitter API "firehose" for system stability and bandwidth cost control, I'm fine with that.  If it's primarily to ensure everyone see advertisements, there's probably a better way of doing it.

App.net?  I'm not sure without seeing the Terms of Service regarding "no advertisements".  Most ToS include the fairly standard language about how the terms may change from time to time with or without notice.  What's "ad-free" today could become "paid accounts with limited adverstisements" in the future, if a company's financial situation necessitates a change.  That being said, though, I have not tried App.net yet, so I will likely give it a try.  Hopefully it's not as dead as Google+ is at time.  :)

Take care,

Adam

@Cliff Ravenscraft  @Adam Bagwell I'm now down to 130 since this episode, from about 250. It's a lot better, but I don't know that I can really go much farther just yet. Not without creating a another list or two.

@Adam Bagwell Thanks for the feedback.  I've actually made some drastic changes to the way I use Twitter and I'm now following less than 100 people.  It's actually helped bring a little more enjoyment to the platform. :)

Well, from what I've seen in the alpha, I'm having a hard time justifying $50/yr.  At least for now, it has the feeling of what Twitter was a year or two ago.  Same conversation stream in a single column down the middle, @ type replies, etc.  At the moment, it seems to lack a "wow!" feature that would make it worth maintaining yet another SM presence.  And if/when it does gain traction and usage grows, spammers will pay the $50/yr to get access to the "less noisy" App.net.

Unless someone sees something I'm not, there's no compelling reasons for me to switch over (yet).

Cliff,

The claims of the issued patent to Apple are indeed fairly broad.  The patent you referenced is a continuation from an earlier application (now US Patent No. 8,020,762), which was a continuation from an even earlier application (now US Patent No. 7,686, 215), which claimed the benefit of the filing date of a provisional application, filed 5/21/2005.  Long story short, they put the world on notice on 5/21/2005 that they intended to file a non-provisional "real" patent application directed to the subject matter in the provisional application.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, as whoever ends up challenging the patent would need to establish that prior art (a computer application, a magazine article, etc.) existed prior to 5/21/05 that clearly did what's claimed in the patent.  As I recall, 2004 was the year podcasting started really taking off, so it should be very interesting indeed.
