My Own Next Step? – Way Beyond My Comfort Zone!
The main purpose of Podcast Answer Man is to help inspire the podcasting community to think about how they can take everything they are doing to the “next level.” I have a strong belief that to inspire others, you must first be willing to do the things that you suggest. That is why I opened this episode by authentically sharing what I feel “might” be needed to take my own business to the next level.

This next step that I am considering will require almost as much faith as my decision to leave my career in insurance to pursue podcasting full-time. Want to know what this potential next step is? Have a listen to the opening of this episode to learn all about it. After you have listened to the episode, if you would like to hear an authentic conversation that my wife and I had about this potential next step, I encourage you to listen to episode 225 of Family From The Heart.

How Do I Remove The Category Base From WordPress?
Brian called in to ask if there was a way to remove the Category base from his WordPress URL. I have to give a special thanks to Podcast Mastermind member Dustin Hartzler, from YourWebsiteEngineer.com, for helping me with an easy solution to Brian’s question. Dustin shared that the easiest way to accomplish this would be to use this plugin.

How Do You Determine Which Interview Requests To Accept?
Joan recently wrote to me to ask, “If somebody invites you to be a guest on their hour-long podcast, and you don’t know them, what criteria do you use to determine whether that might be an hour of wasted time, or one hour very well spent?”

I shared the top five things that I consider when someone invites me to be a guest on their show. I’ll list these five items below. Just know that I give some details about each of these within the episode.

  • Do they have more than ten episodes?
  • I look at the niche topic/focus of the podcast.
  • I evaluate the host(s) of the show for professionalism.
  • I evaluate the content of the show.
  • I make sure to get a feel for why I am being interviewed on the show.

How Robin Dunbar & Michael Hyatt Influenced My Radical Twitter Decision.
A few years ago, I had read The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. This was the first time that I was introduced to the concept of “Dunbar’s Number.” Dunbar’s number is a suggested cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. These are relationships in which an individual knows who each person is, and how each person relates to every other person. Proponents assert that numbers larger than this generally require more restrictive rules, laws, and enforced norms to maintain a stable, cohesive group.

Over the past seven years, I’ve been incredibly blessed to have created and incredibly significant online community around the content that we have produced. One thought that is consistently on my mind is the question of how to scale as it relates to the interaction of this community. As this community has continued to grow, I have come to understand that there really is a limit to the number of people that I can maintain a meaningful relationship with. When I attempt to have meaningful relationships with more than 200 people, I become overwhelmed and have found that all the relationships that I have begin to suffer. Especially the relationships that matter most in my life, with my wife and my children.

I love social media, especially Twitter and Facebook. However, as I have been changing my approach to how I engage with those I am connected to in these social media spaces, I have been struggling through some interesting issues. In this episode, I invite Erik Fisher to join me for another Social Media Segment where I share, for the first time, what’s been going on in my mind recently regarding these social spaces.

I recently made a radical decision to unfollow everyone but those whom I have a regular on-going relationship with. This decision was based partly upon the information that I had learned about Robin Dunbar’s theory. The decision was also influenced by a post that Michael Hyatt wrote on his blog titled Why I Stopped Following You on Twitter. Of course there were other factors involved in this decision, some of which are included in this conversation that I had with Erik.

After listening, I’m sure that some of you will have some thoughts on this topic. I look forward to hearing if you have changed the way that you have engaged with social media sites. How do you determine you you will follow on Twitter, friend on Facebook, connect with on LinkedIN, or include in a circle on Google Plus? Let me know in the comments section below.

Hi Cliff, another great episode.  Great to hear about your potential expansion and new headquarters.  Trust your gut. Question about you and Facebook.  I also love FB and agree with your points.  I've heard a lot of "experts" (you know how that goes) say that you should not combine your personal and business pages.  I could not find a Fan Page for PAM.  Did I miss is it or are you putting all things on your personal page?  Just wonder what yours and Erik's thoughts are around this.  Thanks for all you do.

@Shelia I have heard the same advice.. Though all my stuff can be found at http://Facebook.com/CliffRavenscraft    Right now, my business is me and I am my business.  So it works for me.   Really well. ;)

    Cliff,

Great to hear about the expansion ideas of GSPN.  I was excited for you and the family to hear about this.

Thank thee guys (@ErikJFisher ) for the breakdown of on Twitter and Facebook.  Not ready to focus on Facebook as much right now, but I have realized over the last few days that I want to cut down who I follow.  I am not into the whole, "follow for follow" type thing.  Some people I follow is just so I can easily thank them for a podcast episode.  Besides that, Let the weeding begin.

    Thank thee.

    K, bye

Just a word of caution. As a Dave Ramsey fan and follower (daveramsey.com), It got me worried that you said you wanted to go deeply in debt to make the leap to a commercial building with renovations and all. I think you deserve to make the change and step up your business, but I would like you to explore the possibility of doing that without putting too much at risk your future earnings, maybe by going more slowly. I'm sure you know what you are doing, but I just had to tell you this, because I've always benefited from your advice, and I thought that this message might help you this time.

@Cliff Ravenscraft I've always thought the way people apply quid pro quo to social media was degrading it some 8th grade middle school mentality.  If your interested in what someone has to say you will follow them.  If you say something interesting enough for others to want to hear, they will follow you.  (The only exception being unless they are family and you have some type of blood / thanksgiving free of fighting obligation.)

While I use and highly recommend the wp-nocategory plugin, I would also highly recommend the YoastSEO plugin too. It's hands down the best SEo plugin for Wordpress out there and you can remove the category slug in the permalinks section of the SEO settings. This helps improve the performance of Wordpress as you get multiple benefits from one highly optimized plugin. Of course, this is just my unsolicited 5¢

@remblem Thanks for the feedback Richard.  Yes, there are a lot of things that need to be looked into and check out.  I've been praying about this a great deal and with the feedback I've received so far, I'm certain that there are big things happening in the near future and I'm certain that they would be hindered, if not made entirely impossible, if I were to attempt to do them out of our home.

Cliff, I don't know if you recall but I did run my own company for 7 years. In the beginning I had a commercial location because we manufactured kitchen counter tops. During the last couple of years I had to stop making counter tops and changed to just installation. I moved the office to my house. Cliff, my personal production plummeted upon changing to my home. Just too many distractions for me. You have always worked out of your house so I'm sure you are better at it than I ever was.

My only advice is simple: Do as your advisers recommend, and make sure they aren't a bunch of men who are just used to saying yes to you. I saw your other comment about how wealthy these men are, and that is good but it does not guarantee they remember being where you are now. My guess is that at this point these men are used to most everything they do just working out. I'm sure you agree that no matter how much information we get or what our advisers tell us nothing is a guarantee. I realize I don't know these men and you do, so rock on and believe that I do follow you and pray when I know you have big decisions coming.

@JamesDibben Thank you for the feedback.  Yes, my eight official business advisors were carefully chosen as each of them are further down a path of success that I hope to achieve myself.  Though each of the areas of their success differs greatly among them.

One thing is for sure, these are not "cheerleaders."  These men have no issues with telling me what they really think and I've given each of them permission to do so.

It has been quite some time since many of these individuals were where I am today.  Not only that, things have changed a lot over the past several years.  However, the wisdom and advice I have received from them has always been beneficial.

I also have a personal mastermind group that I meet with weekly.  The members of this group are 100% hand picked and they are a group of my peers, yet each of them have achieved a high level of success that inspires me.   These members are either right where I am have successfully managed their way beyond where I am today within the past few months/years.

I'm also blessed to be the leader of the Podcast Mastermind organization.  This also gives me access to the advice and opinions of 40 members that I have come to know and trust immensely.

Of course, then there is the overall gspn.tv / Podcast Answer Man community that will chime in as well.  Folks like yourself.  Also, folks like Richard Emblem who commented after you.

I'm incredibly thankful for feedback like this.

I can imagine just how much more productive I would be if I did have that place to "go to work."  I appreciate you sharing your experience.

@pctutor I have eight business advisors and all of them are deca-millionaires.  I'm only in the earliest of stages of thinking about this.  Trust me, I'lm 100% onboard with the understanding that "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed." - Proverbs 15:22

Hey Cliff... Have you read this stuff from John Loomer? He deals in Facebook only. This post says you might need to get a fan page instead of a personal account. http://www.jonloomer.com/2012/09/03/benefits-of-a-facebook-business-page/

    Cliff Ravenscraft
    Cliff Ravenscraft moderator

@Ed Lucas Thanks so much for the link to the post.  THough, at this time, I'm still 100% that I have no desire to host a FB page for Podcast Answer Man.

Please know that I'm not being defensive to you Ed, but  I'll go through his 14 benefits.

    1) I barely glance at the analytical data that Google Analytics provides.  I'm not a numbers guy and I have an amazing system for tracking my relationships.

    2) I do not currently have any interest in running contests and I'm not interested in tabs.

    3) Facebook offers is interesting.  But not enough that would make me want to manage another social outpost for my brand at this time.

    4) Profiles may be limited to 5,000 friends, but I have subscriptions turned on.  So anyone can subscribe to all my public updates.  And I post all my updates as public updates.

    5) I disagree that Profiles look unprofessional.  Besides, my personal profile isn't supposed to look "professional"  it's supposed to look like the personal profile of someone who is a professional, who simply has decided to share any posts with FB through his Personal Profile because he has intentionally chose not to manage a FB page for his brand. ;)

And I totally disagree that "it screams "I don't know what I'm doing."  In fact, there are more Facebook Pages that I've sene that SCREAM THAT LOUD AND CLEAR!

    6) I have access to a ton of advertising opportunities that would be much higher than Facebook ads.  The truth is that since I've been in business, I've only spent a total of $5,000 on advertising.  All of this as been through SPONSORING other events which have been tremendously effective.

    7) I'm an open book.  If I post something on Facebook, then I assume the whole world can see it.  If someone does not trust me enough to add me as a friend on Facebook, then they can simply "subscribe" to my updates.  If privacy is a huge concern of those who would like to do business with me, then I would suggest that they reconsider their use of Facebook all together.

Best part is that connecting with me via Facebook is not a requirement of doing business with me at all, in the first place. ;)

    8)  I post all my own content, at this point.  If that ever changes in the future, and I can pay someone to manage a FB page the way that I personally would want it managed, it would be at that time that I would create a page.  But for now, it's just me.

    9) Scheduling is cool.  However, I take a more organic approach to creating content for my social networks.

    10) Don't need Facebook Places.

    11) My personal profile is still very PERSONAL.  It's not my "Brand's name.  So yeah, if it's my Birthday, it will say that it is Cliff Ravenscraft's birthday.  It's really cool to get just over 2,000 birthday wishes from your online community. ;)

    12) If I want to restrict anyone from my personal profile, I can simply block them.

    13) Not interested in 3rd party tools for FB at this time.

    14) I don't think I have any potential issues with being shut down on my personal profile for mixing my business with my pleasure.   Simply look at http://Facebook.com/CliffRavenscraft and you will see that I am heavily engaged with my community there and I do it in a very personal way.
