FEEDBURNER FEAR FIASCO
There was a widespread panic among bloggers and podcasters this past weekend. On Friday, many people woke up to find that Feedburner was reporting that all their feeds had zero subscribers. It’s hard to explain just how many emails, tweets, facebook messages, etc that I had received regarding this issue.

Rather than respond to anyone right away, I immediately tested feedburner and then wrote a blog post titled “Feedburner – Is The Sky Really Falling?” If you have not yet done so, I highly encourage you to read my Feedburner blog post and all the conversations within the comments.

I’m happy to say that my prediction was correct. Feedburner had updated their status blog, letting the world know that they were aware of the issue and that they were working to resolve it. Had people heeded my suggestion of simply enjoying their weekend, they would have come back to find that not only did Feedburner resolve the issue, they also restored all the stats, during the days of the outage, to all accounts.

I will argue that events of this weekend were the greatest thing to happen for those of us who use Feedburner. Why? Because it proves that Google does still have people who work on Feedburner, they do still have a status blog that they will update to let us know when they are working on a widespread issue. I share more of my thoughts in this podcast episode as well.

Should I Pay A Flat Fee For Bandwidth or Pay Per GB?
Recently, Deb had posted a question in the comments section of one of my recent blog posts. She wrote the following:

Just about to pull the trigger and get a LibSyn account for podcasting, but got this new offer from my web hosting company Dreamhost and wondered what you all thought of it.

They say, “Unlike traditional web hosting where monthly pricing is fixed and resources are unlimited, pricing for DreamObjects is usage-based. You only pay for data that you store on our servers and for the amount of data that is transferred from them.

Storage costs start at $0.07 per GB (Amazon S3 starts at $0.12!) and scales all the way down to $0.044 per GB, depending on just how much data you choose to store with us. Outbound transfer costs are fixed at $0.07 per GB.

All beta users will have access to a free trial period lasting TWO WHOLE months! During that time you’ll not incur any charges as long as you store less than 10GB of data and transfer out less than 20GB.

Anything more than 10 and 20 kind of tests the limits of the term “trial” and will incur $0.07/GB overage charges, both for storage and outbound data transfer.”

Thoughts about starting with this as opposed to LibSyn?
Thanks!
Deb

In response to this, my main concern would be the issue of COST.

Let’s say that you average about 60,000 downloads per month and that your average file size is about 50MB.

50MB x 60,000 is 3,000,000 MB  or 2,929.69 GB

If I were paying $0.07 per GB, I’d be paying $205.08 per month.

With Libsyn, you could get their $40 per month account and the cost would be a GUARANTEED FLAT $40 per month.  That means that you would save $1,980.96 per year with Libsyn over what you would pay with the Dream Host plan that is being considering.

I personally prefer FLAT FEES for bandwidth rather than paying Per GB

An Interview Tip That May Improve Your Podcast Interviews
I was recently listening to a podcast interview where the host of the podcast seemed to feel the need to validate each and every single sentence their guest spoke with a “mmmh hmmm,” a “Yeah, ” or a “Right.”

One of the best things you can do when you invite someone to come and share their thoughts on your show is to remain silent while they are talking. Sure, you can affirm something they said every now and then, maybe even laugh at something funny they might say. However, after you have recorded an interview with someone, I encourage you to go back and listen to your interview and see how many times you may have interrupted your guest to make a point, finished a sentence or a thought for your guest, or simply gave a verbal response to each of the things your guest said.

I have found that when I’m interviewing someone, or when I have a co-host, one of the most difficult things for me to do is to remain silent. However, I’ve often found that if I allow my guest to speak, without my interruptions, the results are that the thoughts and feelings of my guests are more clearly communicated.

Social Media Segment
In this weeks’ social media segment, Erik Fisher and I discuss whether or not Twitter displaying your follower count may be a thing of the past and we also discuss the upcoming rebirth of MySpace.
The Return of MySpace.

For those that don’t know this, Erik and I used produce a weekly show called Social Media Serenity. Back on May 5th 2011 we discussed the fact that MySpace was for sale. That was episode 88 and I made a bold statement that MySpace was absolutely worth 100 Million Dollars and I predicted that MySpace would one day return to be a relevant social network.

On July 7th 2011, in episode 97 of SMS, we discussed the fact that Justin Timberlake took ownership stake in MySpace and that I was certain that my prediction would ultimately come true.

On September 24th, Mashable gave us a Sneak Peak into the new MySpace. I’m actually very excited to see the brand new MySpace when it launches.

Cliff,

You are obviously either leading or one of the leading experts on podcasting in the world. On your Feedburner comments though I think you are missing some obvious signs that Google has neglected Feedburner and may be close to eliminating it completing.  This articles makes some decent points:

http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/28/the-feedburner-deathwatch-continues-google-kills-adsense-for-feeds/.

You explained how each of the steps that Google has taken to minimize Feedburner is not that significant in itself.  However adding them all up, it seems significant to me.

@ShawnJRoberts You are not alone in your opinion on my opinion.  If Google ever comes out and says "we are going to shut down Feedburner,"  I will, at that time, say okay, here are the many options that we have to deal with this situation.

Why would Google ANNOUNCE WELL AHEAD OF TIME that they are going to shut down the API and not announce the full shut down of the service?  It makes no sense.  Just rip the band-aide off and go on with what's most important to you.

There is a reason why they have decided to continue the Feedburner Service.

I stick by my thoughts shared in this episode.   If things change, we'll deal with them then.

Until then, I'm going to go on living as if the Mayan calendar was not correct in the Deathwatch of the World and as if TechCrunch is not correct about the Deathwatch of Feedburner.

I caught value in the reminder to not overally acknowledge in an interview.  Sometimes even in a conversation I will over acknowledge what the person is saying and I then realize that I want them to freely talk and not step on their thought process. After hearing about Myspace, I went over and updated my password.  Hopefully we will be able to change our url if rises again.

Thank you Cliff(and Erik).

K, bye

Hi Cliff,

I am signing up for my Libsyn account and the promo code is not working.  It immediately gives me an error when i type in GSPN.

Thanks,

Donielle

@Donielle Buie I've just emailed my contact at Libsyn.  I don't know how long it will take to get an answer.  Could be right away, could be later this weekend.

I don't want to hold up your progress.  Don't want you to miss out on a free month either.  But if you dont' hear back within the next hour or so, and you want to get started without using the promo code, then go for it.

I'll post an update here when I hear back.  Thanks for the heads up.

@Cliff Ravenscraft Thanks Cliff--I just tried again and it's working. One step closer to getting my show launched:)  Feels great!  Thank you so much for all your help.

Cheers,

Donielle

@Donielle Buie That's awesome.  I just checked my email and this is what they wrote. "We put a cap on how many signups can be done for a promo code - just to keep a bot from getting ahold of one and going crazy - I had you limit raised - so the promo code should be working again in a few minutes."

I am so thrilled that my community is so responsive that I'm busting through the upper limits of what they expect to get as the result of my promotion.  Too cool.

Glad they got it working for you.

Hey Cliff,

Have not yet listened to the podcast, but based on your comment above about adding verbal feedback during an interview I have a few thoughts. In real life, when you are face-to-face, you provide nonverbal queues that let the other person know you are engaged with them (leaning forward, eye contact, ...).

When you are on the phone and having a conversation this verbal "meta" communication actually enhances dialog (sounds like um hmm, yeah, yes...).

Now if you are talking about someone who is providing verbal feedback at every turn, I'd agree that is over the top.  But some of this is actually very useful to interactive dialog.  And frankly I use this technique often when I am interviewing.  It helps bring out a much more natural dialog that seems less canned and scripted.

Just wanted to add my two cents here.  In summary, remaining fully silent in dialog is not always a good idea.

@Michael Stelzner I think you'll understand my point better when you actually listen to the episode.  By the way, I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU, when I mention my "friend" that does this.

The point I am making is that there are some who are in the habit of "acknowledging every single sentence" with a very verbal nod of affirmation.  I wish I could give you the example of the two interviews I am specifically talking about.  But they are REALLY AWEFUL.  So much so that I simply felt HORRIBLE for the interviewee.

@Cliff Ravenscraft  Figured you were not talking about me :)  Like I said, I had not listened to the interview.  Just wanted to throw my thoughts on the middle ground.

Cliff Ravenscraft
Cliff Ravenscraft moderator

@Michael Stelzner I totally agree with your middle ground.  I agree with your Barbra Walters statement.  And even in the show notes above, I did say... "Sure, you can affirm something they said every now and then, maybe even laugh at something funny they might say."

So my advice is pretty middle ground as well.  The tip is to "listen to your interview and see how many times you may have interrupted your guest to make a point, finished a sentence or a thought for your guest, or simply gave a verbal response to each of the things your guest said."

But you are certainly right to have the response that you did to what I've written above.  I did say "remain silent while they are talking."

You're point is well received!

@Michael Stelzner I think that's a differences between a _conversation_ and an broadcast interview. Broadcast interviews, like Cliff describes, are intended for _others_ to listen to it. So it's best to remove anything that distracts from what the interviewee is saying and letting them talk.

 @DanielJLewis

I think what Cliff clarified below is clearly not proper and I agree that removing annoying distractions is wise.  But even Barbara Walters uses these techniques when she is interviewing.
