My Secret Podcast Project Revealed
In this episode, I finally reveal that The Lord of the Rings Fan Podcast is the secret project I’ve been working on over the past several months. I explain why I decided to create a Lord of the Rings fan podcast, the approach I’m taking to the show and the reason why I have decided to delay the official launch of the podcast. It is my hope that sharing this information will help you understand some of the thoughts that I consider before committing to the launch of an additional podcast.

Personal Plug of The Week
This week’s Personal Plug of the Week is for Willie Urish’s Deer Hunting Podcast. Willie’s done an excellent job and has great energy in his podcast. If you happen to be a deer hunter, you’ll certainly want to check it out. If you’re not a deer hunter, you probably know somebody who is; be sure to tell them about Willie’s Deer Hunting podcast, and if you like it, be sure to let him know you heard about him from the Podcast Answer Man. Congratulations to Willie on publishing his first podcast episode this week!

Podcasting A to Z
This week’s Personal Plug of the Week, Willie Urish, happens to be one of our current Podcasting A to Z students. If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to finally launch that podcast you’ve always dreamed of, now is the perfect time to sign up! The next Podcasting A to Z course will be January 14th through February 8th. You can learn more about it and sign up at podcastingatoz.com.

Streaming vs. Downloading – Are Stats Going Down As A Result?
In this episode of Podcast Answer Man I talked about how the way people consume content today using mobile phone applications for podcasts is causing people to stream episodes when they’re ready to listen versus having episodes automatically download for every podcast they’re subscribed to. I share my thoughts on how this may be effecting some people’s stats and what I’ve even noticed on my own stats for Podcast Answer Man and the various other shows that I produce.

Public Service Announcement About Animated GIFs!
One of the things that happened to me this week is that I realized that I was annoyed by the fact that I had an animated GIF image in my sidebar flashing the different benefits of the ScreenFlow software.

It’s been so far down in my sidebar that I’ve really never noticed it before, but while I was responding to a comment the other day and had that comment up on my screen for a lengthy period of time, I found myself annoyed and distracted by the rotating, flashing image. So I made a decision to turn that image for ScreenFlow into a static image. My recommendation is that we not use animated images in our sidebar if we can avoid it.

Cliff I am so excited for the LOTR podcast! Please keep us informed on this as I definitely will be subscribing. I pulled out my copy of The Hobbit and will be reading along with you as soon as the show releases.

Cliff,

Loved the Social Media segment.  And the continued debate about Google+.

For me the only reason I use Google+ is for the communities and the hangouts.

The Podcasting community is amazing.  I have learned neat little tricks there.  In fact, Mike Russell from the Music Radio Creative posted a little You Tube video on how he changed is voice in Adobe Audition, and that gave me an idea on how to create characters for my podcast in Audacity.  I was having a ball playing around and making several characters and I am using these Characters in this weeks up coming episode of Let's Reverse Obesity. (Shameless Plug)

Ray Ortega started the Podcasters Round Table and I thought what a great format to use for weight loss so I'm launching The Weight Loss Round Table Podcast in January.  Willie Gillis and his wife are on my 1st panel.

I guess my reasons for wanting you there are selfish, I had 4 weeks of daily constant contact with you during the Podcasting A to Z course.  You taught us with such selfless passion, and we as a group responded.  I learned so much about podcasting it was amazing, then it was over, it was depressing.  I admit, I went through Podcast A to Z withdraw.  But with the Google+ Podcast Community I feel that passion again.  I want to say, "Hey Cliff, look at this" but you are not there.

It's not a big deal, because I know where to find you.  I'm just telling all the same things here.

Daniel Hayes and I stay in contact, we have done a few Google Hangouts and he has helped me with some things and I noticed that in Google Hangouts there is a Texas Holdem App.  Let's get a bunch of podcast guys together and play some poker. I know a little bit about the game and would be glad to help anyone who had questions.

Happy Holiday to You Stephanie and the Kids

@John Bukenas I totally get why you are loving G+.  I'm thrilled to hear that you are connecting with Willie Gillis and his wife for a Weight Loss Panel.  That is AWESOME!

As for the Podcasting A to Z withdrawal, I totally get it.  However, imagine answering questions from 5am to 11pm five says a weeks a week and for five hours on Saturday for 20 people who are just getting started in the world of Podcasting.

As you might imagine, I need a huge break from discussing anything related to the technical side of podcasting.  This is why I focus my time on shows like The Hunger Games, Twilight Saga, and now The Lord of The Rings/Hobbit, etc.

So far, I've had 185 students go through Podcasting A to Z.  I've helped more than 1,000 individuals through one-on-one coaching/consulting and I've had more than 23,000 views on my free Learn How To Podcast tutorial.

I find that staying on top of 40 to 100+ emails each day, responding to every comment posted here and on my gspn.tv site and keeping up with Twitter, and all the comments on my Facebook profile to be about the MAXIMUM that I can possibly handle.

If I had more of me to go around, there are a few areas that I would consider going:

1) A Facebook Fan Page

2) A Facebook Group

3) A Linked In Group

4) A Google+ Community

However, as it stands, none of the four items are currently showing up on my radar.

So far, I am not penalized by Facebook or LinkedIn for not using them.  However, Google does penalize me for not using Google+.  And well, that just really bothers me.

I do love my community.  And I am so incredibly thankful that you know where you can find me and that you still take time out of your day to come and post updates and share your milestones with me John.  I am incredibly blessed to be able to carry on this relationship with you through things like these comments back and forth.

I look forward to hearing your new voice characters on your show.  Please tell Willie that Cliff says hello.

And Merry Christmas to you and your family!

@ErikJFisher Oh, that will get changed soon.  That's one of those things that a lot of people will scream and kick about until it's changed.

Wait, they made LOTR books of the movies?!

Cliff, I like the idea of you charting your unexpected journey. Even if the primary podcast is solo delivery, maybe there will be an opportunity for you to have quarterly Google+ roundtables focused on certain themes. Of course, this would only be legit if your entire table was in full LOTR costume.

@Boenau That is a GREAT IDEA!  Thanks for the vote of interest in the show!

Further thoughts on podcast DOWNLOAD stats.  You're right on that the DOWNLOADS number is misleading.  But my usage is even different than what you talked about.  There's several podcasts where I'm subscribed and want to keep a complete archive of the episodes, and FYI PodcastAnswerMan is one of those podcasts.  Like you said I'll sometimes skip listening to everything for several weeks, then come back and see a tall pile of unlistened podcast episodes.  Unlike what you said, I do not diligently listen to every single unlistened episode but will just mark them listened/watched.

Because of this I DELETED the official podcasts app off my iPad so that the Music/Video apps on that device would again show podcasts and synchronize with desktop iTunes.  But it means while on a trip that I can't grab new podcast episodes.

Anyway, when I download an episode and do not listen (for whatever reason) the podcaster has NO IDEA that this happened.  In other words, the DOWNLOAD stats are misleading, period.

It would seem the better stat to look at is something which represents the engagement .. such as actual traffic on the website.  But as I said that, I realized that I rarely go to the website related to a podcast.  In fact, I started to send this to you via email but then remembered you have a website, and decided to do the comment here instead.

@robogeek Actually, I think that the Media delivery stats are still the best matrix to look at.  In fact, with the "general" move toward streaming, the stats are becoming more and more accurate.  Yes, there will always been those of us who are used to "downloading and archiving" who will continue to do so.  However, the person who discovers podcasting for the very first time in 2013 and beyond, will more than likely be a "streamer" versus a downloader.

I think you're right - that a real LOTR fan hearing you say you haven't read the books - well, what kind of fan can you be, really?  I hear you about the "fan wannabe" status.  Maybe you could bring in a cohost who is a fan, and who is interested in helping people as you suggest.  In fact in my mind I imagined myself in that role, in that I'm not a hard core uber-LOTR fan, but have read the trilogy and the Hobbit and the Silmarillion and would appreciate the opportunity myself to revisit all that ...

@robogeek Not interested in brining a co-host in on this show.  I have some folks in mind for an occasional guest spot.  However, my dream for this is for it to be a solo fan podcast experiment.

I'll be interested to hear this new podcast. I've been reading The Hobbit to my daughter and it's been a lot of fun. It will be interesting to see what you can do with the podcast. Like you said, there is a LOT of stuff to cover

I really like that artwork for the LOTR podcast.  I enjoyed the movies and have seen them a few times, but like you have not read the books.  Not sure I will be reading the books soon, but remember to how to say the best way to follow with the show. As in read a chapter and then listen to show?

Your mention of the flashing graphics reminded me of the complaint that many people had with MySpace. Ha.

Thanks for this episode.

K, bye
