300 The Importance of Networking With Others Online – My Story of Networking With Pat Flynn – Google Shuts Down Reader, Is Feedburner Next?

by Cliff Ravenscraft on March 14, 2013

Pat Flynn & Cliff RavenscraftCelebrating My 300th Episode
I knew that I wanted to do something special to celebrate my 300th episode of Podcast Answer Man. I thought that sharing one of the greatest keys to my success would be the perfect way to do that. What is this key to success? It’s the value that I place on the relationships of the people that I have intentionally chosen to do life with.

To give you an example of this, I invited my great friend, Pat Flynn from SmartPassiveIncome.com to join me for this episode. Through our conversation, you’ll learn how Pat and I first met back on December 3rd, 2009 and how we came to develop the relationship that we have had since that time.

You’ll hear a little bit about our mastermind group relationship and how, through this mastermind group, Pat inspired two of the biggest wins within my online business so far.

As I said in this episode, my relationship with Pat is just one of many relationships that I value just as highly. It is my hope that this episode inspires you to take your intentional relationships to the “next level.”

Google Shuts Down Google Reader, Is Feedburner Next?
Many people noticed that when they logged into their Google Reader account, yesterday, the following message was displayed on their screen:

Google is shutting down Google Reader

Google is shutting down Google Reader

Of course, this news has caused a large volume of emails from folks who are wondering if I now believe that Google would shut down Feedburner at some point in the future. I actually share my most recent thoughts on this issue within the first few moments of this episode.

“GSPN: My 300th episode with PatFlynn is now LIVE at http://t.co/ALBnhkICANCAN Check it out!”

  • davedufour

I use Feedly, which currently depends on Google Reader, but they’ve announced that they’re already working on a solution that doesn’t.
Re: Feedburner: I’m with you Cliff — no emergency, but I think Google may eventually drop the service, based on their history of housecleaning.

  • illinimatt81

I think feedburner is on the chopping block. I migrated away from it last fall when this flared up and I am glad I did.
“The company said it would retire seven other products and services over the next few months.”  They also are rolling out Google Takeout which allows users take their data out of multiple Google products and collate it in portable and open formats, making it easy to export to other services.
I moved away from Feedburner and it wasn’t hard and I feel great that I did it.

  • @davedufour Thanks for the feedback Dave.  I’ve been using “reeder” on my iPhone that integrates with Google Reader. I hope they are working on something as well. 😉

  • @illinimatt81 The other products that are going to be cleaned out over the next few months have already been announced.  Feedburner is not on that list.

I’m glad that you found a solution that works for you.  I’ll admit that this move to cancel Google Reader does cause me to put the creation of a new solution for podcast feeds higher up on my priority list.

  • JimMcKee

davedufour I just started using Feedly yesterday, and I love it… way better than Google Reader!

  • JimMcKee davedufour I actually saw MichaelHyatt mention Feedly on his Twitter stream the other day. I have also switched to it.  Haven’t taken a chance to really get into how it all works, but I do like what I have seen so far.

  • Two of my favorite online people.

  • sorry, “online” sounded like you’re in some fantasy land. I mean to say, two of my favorite people… that I have never met personally that seem humble and passionate about helping others succeed.

  • Great episode – man I love you guys.  It’s also refreshing that you don’t ask the same typical questions – most of us know Pat’s story, but you brought a totally different approach.  Great nuggets and I couldn’t agree more on the power of networking.  You both made a huge difference at NMX for me.  Thanks again Cliff and Pat.

  • Shelia Thanks Sheila.  I was SO THRILLED that you were able to be a part of the meetup that I hosted at NMX.  I think of you when I see that photo at the top of my Facebook profile. 😉

  • 300 Episode with Pat Flynn. I love hearing the Pat Flynn Podcast story. Great show you guys make sound so easy. 🙂

  • Herby Fabius LOL… It’s not easy… But it is SO WORTH IT!

  • TrishJones

Fantastic Cliff. I actually only wanted to hear the part about Feedburner but so glad I stayed to listen to the rest. You mentioned a few strategies that I know I can implement in my business so I can stop trading time for money. Thanks Cliff!

  • TrishJones Trish, I’m so glad that you stuck around for the full episode and found some value in the information that we discussed!  I appreciate that you took the time to share it here!  Thank you!

  • TrishJones

Cliff Ravenscraft TrishJones You’re very welcome, Cliff

  • dmlivefyre You know, I almost completely forgot about the My Brand feature.   Feedburner came out with this service before they were purchased by Google.  At the time, I already had a very large number of podcasts using the actually feedburner address.
If Feedburner does ever go away, there will be changes that need to be made.  Having the control over the domain name for the feed does add an extra level of control.  I may consider creating a tutorial for my students to use this as an option.
BTW, I am so sorry that it’s taken me this long to respond.  For some reason, the link caused this to get stuck in a spam filter.

  • Cliff Ravenscraft dmlivefyre  Darn those pesky spam filters!  Thanks for replying.

  • dmlivefyre No doubt.  I’m just glad that I had scheduled some time to look through all the comments marked spam.  Hope you are having a blessed week.

  • Thanks for this episode, Cliff. And every episode! I’m brand new to the community. A friend recommended Michael Hyatt to me when I said I want to start a podcast, and I heard you on his show, and badda boom badda bing… now I’m listening through your catalogue, and thanks to this episode now I’m listening to Flynn too. I appreciate you brother, and hope to have more interaction in the future!

  • Chadeddy So glad that you are finding your way to some of the top inspirational content on the web.  I wish you great success in your online journey.
