301 YouTube Thoughts For Audio Podcasters

YouTube Thoughts For Podcasters
I can’t believe that I have barely had any coverage of YouTube here on Podcast Answer Man. In this episode, I have Erik Fisher join me for an extended Social Media Segment to spend a great deal of time talking about YouTube and how podcasters can make use of this wonderful distribution channel.

Personal Plug of The Week
Back of February 16th, I received an email from LouAnn Clark. Here’s what she wrote….

–Begin Quote–
Hi, Cliff. We didn’t officially meet at Michael Hyatt’s Platform Conference, but I was in the audience, and I was wowed by your presentation. I came home and started looking for a place to put a recording studio; it turns out I have a closet that looks close to perfect! I’ll be ordering equipment from you soon.

I said on social media that the podcast went from tenth to first on my list. I am beyond excited about this. As a former broadcaster, I still yearn for my first love, radio. It looks like podcasting is a way to use my best gifts, have the most fun, and communicate my message about healthy thinking. I am a depression survivor who has learned to thrive; I am ten years into recovery after more than twenty years of depression, and I want to share my “hows” with others who are suffering.

Thanks again for sharing your expertise at Platform. You were already on my list (I’m a huge fan of Dan Miller’s) and it was a real pleasure to learn from you firsthand. Thanks for the free resources on your website. I’m on lesson 7 and raring to go! I have a goal of putting my podcast online by March 18.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We exchanged some emails back and forth and she, soon after, purchased the Podcast Answer Man equipment package found at http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/equipment.

On March 17th, one day before the deadline set for achieving her goal, LouAnn sent me the following email.

Cliff, I wanted to let you know that my Decided Difference podcast was launched today! It is still “under review” in iTunes, but it’s up on my blog if you want to check it out.

The initial feedback I am getting is from people saying they want to hear more. WIN!

I love my equipment, and your podcasting 101 got me up and running.

Here is a photo of me in my tiny studio. I love it!

I listened to her first episode and it is AWESOME!

Oh… And BTW, she is now listed in iTunes. I just posted a review with a 5 star rating!

Hey Cliff! Thanks for this post. I know you pop up in the comments a lot, and I have a pretty weird question for you. My brother and wife and I have a pretty successful YouTube channel (Blimey Cow is the name: youtube.com/blimeycow) that has over 90,000 subscribers and 16 million video views. On Tuesday, we launched a very modest Kickstarter campaign to raise $1,700 to start our own audio podcast. In 3 days, we’ve raised over $7,000. We are absolutely floored, and now I’m scrambling around to figure out how best to utilize these funds that people are kind enough to give us. Do you have any advice? Here’s the link to Kickstarter too in case you want to see it: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joshtaylor/the-official-blimey-cow-audio-podcast
Anyway, God bless you man. What you do here is great. I’m a new listener.

    Hi Cliff.
You mentioned about not liking your user name on YouYube, you could always set up a sub-domain with the resulting url for example being video.podcastanswerman.com (video is the sub domain) and using your dns server to forward it to your YouTube page. I’ve set both my Youtube and Google plus this way. Now I just give my address as plus or video tagged to the front of my root domain name.

    Peter Noble

  • peteranoble Good point.  I might get around to doing that one of these days.  Thanks for the suggestion.

  • peteranoble

Cliff RavenscraftpeteranobleWhats cool is that you have some control over links to your videos. If you move to another provider you don’t have to change all your links.  You would create the new video files with the old Youtube link as the file name or use you server Rewrite file to direct them to the new files. Your current ink to a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j6OwJ3ltU0 would become video.designerwebhosting.co.uk/?v=2j6OwJ3ltU0

  • joshtaylor388 Josh.. Thanks a lot.. So I ended up watching the Kickstarter Video, then a sample of your Messy Monday show and then the minute worship song video.  FINALLY…. I had the self discipline to put an end to my addiction to distraction and decided to close the other tab and come back here and respond to your message. (that was meant as a LOL). 🙂
First off… CONGRATS ON ALL YOUR SUCCESS!!!! THAT IS AWESOME!  You guys are doing GREAT WORK!!!!
I am THRILLED to hear of your desire to start a an audio podcast.  Even better, I think it is SO AWESOME that your Kickstarter campaign demonstrates the desire of YouTube communities to have access to brand content in audio form where they can TAKE YOU WITH THEM while they do things that don’t allow them to watch a screen.
Where could you spend those funds?
Well, I would say on some great audio equipment.  However, I listened to the audio and your videos and you guys SOUND AMAZING!  No need for any new gear.
I’d say that you could take advantage of my $500 discount offer on my http://PodcastingAtoZ.com course if you sign up before the end of March by using discount code “EB5.”  That would bring the cost of the course down to $1,499 and give you access to all my tutorials and access to ask me any questions you like for four weeks.   However, my guess is that you guys would be able to pull of the audio podcast podcast without the course, judging by what I see you doing on YouTube.  Just watch my free tutorial at http://LearnHowToPodcast.com and if you need help setting up a WordPress website and configuring it for podcasting, and getting into all the podcast directories, then simply grab my WordPress for Podcasters tutorial at http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/products
You guys could simply take a vacation and use the money to come on the GSPN Community Disney Cruise.  Details at http://gspn.tv/cruise. 😉
Seriously though… I’m not sure what to tell you without knowing more about your goals.  One thing I can say, is that audio podcasting is pretty inexpensive once you get it up and running.
Keep me posted on how things go!

  • Hey Cliff,
I believe you can change your user name in your Youtube Channel by linking your cliffeotc Youtube account with your Googel + account. It would change your Youtube account to display as your name. It is fairly easy to do but I don’t remember the exact steps right now but I know it can be done.

  • Andrew McGivern Interesting.  I may just look into that. Thanks Andrew!

  • joshtaylor388

Cliff Ravenscraft Thank you so much for your quick and detailed reply. The mic we use for video is a RODE NTG-2 which is a boom condenser mic and not optimal for audio recording. I’m probably going to take your advice and pick up at least three Heil PR40s (There will be three hosts for the show), along with  Adobe Audition for audio editing.
We want our podcast to reflect our personalities and be set up somewhat like a “morning show” format with segments, and lots of conversations. (i.e. taking listener questions, discussing topics, doing some board games reviews, talking about YouTube, behind the scenes…etc).
Basically, I had set everything up thinking I was going to need to cut corners to make this thing work, but we’ve gotten SO much support that it’s looking like (at least to some small degree) the sky is the limit. We have even floated the idea of possibly doing some kind of live show too in addition to the podcast.
I appreciate your recommendations for the different tutorials and such. I will definitely look into those. Do you have any recommendations for the best ways to utilize $7,000+ dollars on equipment in a way that would just really make this show shine? I really want to do my best to ensure this thing has a really professional touch considering how generous people have been via Kickstarter.
Again, thank you for your help.

  • joshtaylor388

Cliff Ravenscraft Oh! And thanks for the kind words about our channel and our Kickstarter! Feels great to hear encouragement from a guy I really respect!

  • joshtaylor388   Yep, If it were me, I’d get one full Podcast Answer Man package and two additional Heil PR-40 packages from http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/equipment.
The only additional item to consider would be an MDX-4600.  Here’s a video that talks about the value this might add:

Cliff Ravenscraft Man, I really, really appreciate all of your help. I may pop back in here at some point with more questions. Seriously, thanks so much. God bless you, Cliff!

  • joshtaylor388 I wish you great success with your audio podcasting journey!  You guys will knock it out of the park!
I hope you have have an amazing weekend!

    YouTube Nightmare!
Cliff, big fan of yours, even though I’m not a podcaster myself I help my wife with her Yoga Video Podcast (melissawest.com). I film, upload to the various channels (http://www.youtube.com/DrMelissaWest), etc., and we’ve had a blast with it. I find your podcast covers many things, the fundamentals are sound and the quality is excellent. I realize that you’re an audio podcaster but I and many others have found the most recent update by YouTube to be horrible. I actually found it visually less appealing and the conversion statistics were horrible. When I say conversions, I mean the number of new subscribers fell off considerably…I measured it for a full eight hours and was simple aghast at the drop off. After listening to this podcast I felt that you thought it was an improvement and i must say that IMHO this was a terrible update. To that end I even posted a short video on how to return people to their previous channel look, believing that others may have had the same experience. In the last two weeks, I have had almost 200 comments of praise. In case your other listeners were less than impressed with the new look and feel of YouTube, here’s a link on how to revert back to the old style.
I realize that YouTube need to make the channel better for mobile (responsive), but felt I should let you know that not everyone is loving this new look. All the best and Thanks again for your awesome podcast. Cheers

  • Timothy West Tim, thanks so much for the feedback from the perspective of someone who has been using YouTube Heavily.   So sorry to hear how the changes have had an negative impact on your brand.

  • Timothy West

Cliff Ravenscraft Timothy West TY, Change is the only constant. Currently I reverted back to the old look and all is well. One day I will brave the new look again. 🙂
