Falling In Love With Evernote? (Starts at 00:46:52)
In this week’s episode, I invite Erik Fisher to be a sounding board while I go on and on about why I have made the decision to dive, head first, into Evernote. Are you an Evernote fanatic? If so, please share what you love about Evernote and what apps you have connected to it in the comments below.

USA Today Article Says Podcast Is Booming (Starts at 00:01:43)
Many people wanted to know my thoughts about the USA Today Article on Podcasting that was released last week. Many podcasters were very upset with a few of the inaccuracies within the written article itself about the origin of podcasting, with assuming that podcasting ever went anywhere to have to return from, and for making it look as though the celebrities from the mainstream media are responsible for saving the podcasting medium from extinction.

In this episode, I share my full thoughts on my reactions to this article.

Two Thirds of The World’s Population Does Not Have The Internet (Starts at 00:23:00)
In this week’s Social Media Segment, Erik and I discuss Mark Zuckerberg’s mission to bring the Internet to the the entire world’s population. We also briefly discuss Google’s Loon Project.

Regarding some of your comments on the USA story:
Hardwick is an interesting guy. Despite his desire to be known as a standup, I don’t find him even remotely funny. But I think he’s found a real nice with hosting for panels, plus Talking Dead and Talking Bad. And he conducts some very solid interviews as part of the Nerdist. But most of all, I admire his business acumen. Podcasting has certainly benefited from his involvement.
I think Jeff Garlin’s comments need to be taken in context. This was a celebrity-driven story…and Garlin is a celebrity…both from his role on Curb Your Enthusiasm and on the new ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. I think he was addressing the idea of rich in terms of “celebrity dollars”. Like so many, Garlin is using podcasting to build his personal brand. Plus, he DOES love to hear the sound of his own voice. ;)

In regards to Evernote, nice timing as I was just re-evaluating it as well.  At the moment I use the follow:

Omnifocus: for capturing all the ideas/things in my head (per David Allen/GTD).
Getpocket : only from iPad while reading ZITE
Asana: Project Management when collaboration is required.
Dropbox: shared content and overall syncing of stuff I want/need everywhere

I think the key is to visit whatever system you have often to make it work.

All three that I use are currently at the free level.  Considering upgrading to the paid version of Evernote for the extended features and it may then alleviate the use of getpocket as with the free version of Evernote there is/was a sync limit per month which I always bumped up against.  I changed my outlook of “paying” for things last year as investments vs expenses.  Well worth the mindset change!

    just my 02.

    thx Cliff & Erik!

Hey Cliff, you might want to check out scifi author and Evernote Paperless Living Ambassador Jamie Todd Rubin’s series of posts on Evernote: <a href=”http://www.jamierubin.net/going-paperless/”>http://www.jamierubin.net/going-paperless/</a&gt;.
Jamie’s been a wealth of useful ideas for me. I’ve organized my notebooks and tags in a similar manner. I use a Fujitsu Scansnap S1300i to import a variety of paper documents into Evernote so that I can easily search for them and have them with me on the go as well as reduce paper clutter at home. I use Evernote to jot down ideas really quickly, do research, save really useful articles and images and code snippets and the like. I also use Evernote with IFTTT to automate a kind of personal social media journal, importing my tweets, Facebook status updates and posts, and such.
Like Jamie, I try to keep my tags to a minimum and make use of Evernote’s advanced search syntax and saved searches to find stuff. Since Evernote makes everything in your note searchable and has powerful search capabilities,  there’s not a pressing need to heavily tag notes, especially if the word is already present in the note or attachment.

chazzbro Thanks so much for feedback.  I must admit, I like hearing the sound of my own voice also. ;)

  • http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/ Cliff Ravenscraft

hubertk Thanks so much Hubert, I am delighted that you listened to any portion of the show.  I started putting the “start time” for each of the segments so that folks could do exactly as you did. ;)  Thank you so much for sharing this extremely valuable feedback.
    Based upon your feedback…
    - I created a notebook called “owners manuals”
    - If I can get Stephanie hooked on Evernote, I will certainly use the shopping list notebook.  I think I almost had her convinced in the car the other day when I told her how she could use this for ALL of her recipes.
    - I love the idea of your posing notebook.  I could see myself finding headshots that I like and seeing if I can use them for future angles that I want to get for my own future headshots, etc.
    - I plan to look more into “encrypted notes”
Thank you again for this amazing information!!!!!!

Adam Silver Adam, I was so thankful to change my mindset from “expense” to “investment” about four years ago.  When I did, my income drastically moved upward in a major way.   Today, I’m almost hesitant to work with a company or service that doesn’t have any method of charging for its services. :)

  • http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/ Cliff Ravenscraft

gaplaucheGeoffrey Thanks for the link. I’ve added that list of articles to my Evernote Inbox. ;)
I actually went paperless a few years back suing the Scansnap S1300i.   Today, I use the new ScanSnap iX500. WOW! This is an AWESOME SCANNER!
I’ll have to give some thoughts on how I might also use IFTTT with evernote.  Thanks for the inspiration there!
    Great point on the tags!

Hi Cliff and Erik,  what a monster edition of the show! It’s a good job that I was only walking the dog and not running, I don’t think I could run that far!  The conversation about expanding the Internet across the whole globe was very interesting. I recently attended a conference by the Visual Story Network and there was a speaker there from an organisation  similar to (http://www.mobileministryforum.org/ )  There is a very interesting idea that is being expanded that could be very useful for podcasts which is called “digital wells.” This is where people will visit a local village and download content at a specific terminal which is in a cafe or store and then return to their village and “Bluetooth” the content to each of their friends. Obviously, there are certain limitations on the size of files, but what an interesting idea.
I’ve been using Evernote for about six months and find it very useful, particularly the web clipper. Currently I am planning a vacation and have set up a notebook specifically for that trip and it has been very helpful when searching the web to just email articles and recommendations into that notebook ready for when I have some time to do research, and it’s all there.
Thanks again for the content you provide, always interesting, always helpful, always inspirational. What’s the software that you use to produce your cracked image graphics? They they look great.

Great episode Cliff — I LOVE Evernote.  You might also take a look at Powerbot for Gmail as it allows you to send emails directly to Evernote and you can assign the notebook, tags, comments and reminders.  It helps me with inbox ZERO :)

  • http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/ Cliff Ravenscraft

Shelia Thanks Sheila.  I am IN LOVE WITH EVERNOTE.  I am using the Web Clipper for putting emails into Evernote from Gmail. But I will look into Powerbot.  Thanks!

Cliff Ravenscraft Skitch is a great EN trunk app as well.

I really love Evernote.  Just like you Cliff I did not
absolutely love it until I signed up for the premium membership.  I use Evernote for anything I can work
    paperless.  I love scanning documents
into Evernote from my Fuji SnapScan scanner.
This has reduced my file cabinet size by 90% and rids my office of the
cluttered paper.  I use Evernote for
tracking business ideas, taking notes in meetings, and keep business
receipts.  I can forward an email that
has a receipt attached right into my Evernote.
I can also upload household appliance manuals to Evernote and it becomes
searchable.  This has helped me find
solutions to problems with my fridge, microwave, and even my car recently.   I plan to do a video blog soon on my site
atpeace360.com about Evernote where I have started to integrate video blogs
into my blogging and very soon to finally add Podcasting.  Thanks for all that you do!

  • AtPeace360

I’ve also been doing things with Skitch where I will integrate the drawing right into ScreenFlow

AtPeace360  Thanks for the feedback.  Yeah, the premium account made all the difference, for sure.

Chris Hardwick.  I only know him from Talking Bad, a tv show that’s more or less like a fan podcast of Breaking Bad.  So, I looked him up on Wikipedia.  Guess what?  I only know him from Talking Bad.

JimMcKee Then you aren’t watching The Walking Dead and its aftershow, Talking Dead. Or attending panel discussions at ComiCon (he hosts several each year with the casts of movies you’ve seen) and the other big cons. Or watching The Nerdist TV show on BBC America. Or listening to The Nerdist podcast, one of the Top 10 podcasts across ALL categories (and the place I hear him most regularly). The guy is all over the place.

  • http://opinionocity.com/ JimMcKee

chazzbro You’re right, I’m not. I don’t do “celebrity” podcasts. They bore the crap out of me. The only things I watch on BBC America are Copper and Orphan Black.

  • http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/ Cliff Ravenscraft

JimMcKee chazzbro I never knew who Chris Hardwick was until I took on the Director of Podcasting position for New Media Expo.
I had never watched Walking Dead and have never been to ComiCon and I don’t subscribe to any comedy podcasts.  It’s just that Chris was in a different circle of the podcasting space.
Of course, for NMX, my goal is to create a podcasting track that does its best to be inclusive of all the various categories of podcasting and that’s when I first heard of Chris Hardwick and The Nerdist podcast.
Since then, I have seen him EVERYWHERE!  ;)

  • http://ChuckBrown.com/ chazzbro

JimMcKee The Nerdist airs right after Orphan Black. I don’t watch it, though I’ve seen a couple shows. I understand about the celebrity thing. I do enjoy them…mostly, interview shows. But it’s not everyone’s cup-o’-tea. ;)

  • http://ChuckBrown.com/ chazzbro

Cliff Ravenscraft JimMcKee He’s got an interesting story. I don’t know a lot of it. His dad (Billy Hardwick…check out this beer commercial: http://youtu.be/h_pDPhEk440) was one of the top-ranked bowlers in the world, I believe. There were celebrities hanging around him who wanted to play against him and learn from him. When he grew up, Chris became co-host of Singled Out (with Jenny McCarthy) on MTV in the Nineties. He was apparently a self-described obnoxious overweight drunk during most of that period. Somewhere along the line, he turned his life around…lost weight, quit drinking, got productive. He wrote a book called The Nerdist, which (over time) he built into a brand. Again, his standup comedy pretty much eludes me, but I think he’s a good interviewer, and he seems to have a nose for business and has carved out a very large space with the Nerdist network of podcasts. I found it a fairly compelling story.

  • http://opinionocity.com/ JimMcKee

    chazzbro
Cliff Ravenscraft Mind you, I am not knocking the guy, he does a good job hosting Talking Bad.  I guess what I’m saying is that I’m just outside the mainstream of today.  I also don’t watch ANY reality show, nor anything like American Idol or Dancing With The Stars. Sounds like he’s living the dream, though, and so kudos to him.  If I could be half as successful, I’d be bouncing off of the moon.

  • http://www.thinklikeaninvestor.com TomSie

I have tried several times to love Evernote, because so many people have talked about how incredible it is. I seem to need the ability to create nested lists and notes. Evernote does not allow enough flexibility for me in this area. I don’t know… maybe I need to try the premium version. I can’t believe that I am saying this, but Microsoft Onenote works a lot better for me. Onenote allows me to create a notebook and within the notebook I can create tabs to separate topics and within the tabs I can create multiple pages. This is a much more robust organization system for my brain. Not only that, but Onenote allows me to create a very comprehensive outline (better than workflowy) and I can tag any item in the outline and make it a todo item. I can tag a specific part of a note instead of the entire note. So,, once I found Onenote and got used to it, I stopped trying to like Evernote.

  • http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/ Cliff Ravenscraft

TomSie Thanks for sharing your experience.  The important thing is that we find a system that works for us.  Sounds like Onenote is doing what you need it to do.  Sounds like a great program.

  • mmodesti

Just curious if you will be posting anything in writing on the task system for Evernote that you outlined over at the Beyond the Todo List podcast. I got the impression there was more you had more to share. Your system sounds like the first simple approach that makes sense to me (I’m a little slow). Thanks!

mmodesti I created an amazing webinar on Evernote for the members of The Podcast Mastermind.  However, I don’t have plans to turn it into a stand alone product.  If you are interested in purchasing that, you can email me at Cliff@Ravenscraft.org and I will give you details.  Cost would be $49
