smartlavsnWired Lavalier Recommendation for Speakers and Presenters
I’ve often been asked what type of lavalier mic I would recommend for a professor who wanted to record their classroom lectures or for speakers who wanted to have an audio recording of their own presentation.

In this episode, I give my full endorsement of the Rhode SmartLav wired Lavalier mic. This is a very inexpensive, yet high quality, wired lavalier mic made specifically to work with your smart phone (Will not work with digital recorders). I recommend getting the official Rode Rec iOS App to go with it if you have an ios device. I demonstrate how this wired lav sounds when hooked up to my iPhone in this episode. (Starts at 00:13:39)

How Much Is Too Much Talk About Me?
Colin called in say that he recently created a podcast to talk about his experience of living with HIV. After producing several episodes, he has become concerned that he may be talking too much about himself. Colin wanted to know my opinion on how much is too much when it comes to talking about yourself in your podcast. You can hear Colin’s question and my response starting at 00:36:06.

Also In This Episode:
There are several other things that I bring up in this podcast episode. For example, I reveal which podcast is my all-time favorite podcast to produce, how I totally screwed up a podcast episode earlier this week, whether folks should purchase equipment before their Podcasting A to Z session starts, inspiration from Sabas Flores, and whether or not I feel it’s okay to start a brand new podcast using one of the many free podcast hosting services.

Cliff:

I purchased the smart lav and received it today. I was going to download the iphone app and there are a number of reviews bashing the app.  Have you had any problems with the app?

Cliff, I've been thinking about getting that Rode lapel for sometime now and you just pushed me over the edge! I'm heading over to amazon with your affiliate link right now! Thanks for another great episode. I always enjoy hearing your voice!

Cliff once again, amazing stuff. I'm wondering how it would be possible to get 2 wired lav mics to work on the same video. I'm thinking of me and a guest talking for example. Would it be as simple as buying an extension chord and a spliter?

Cliff, loved your episode. I have an android phone. Do you have an app recommendation similar to the Rode Rec for android? Thanks for all your help.

Hi Cliff, great episode... Sorry to hear about your recording mishap with Pursuing a Balance Life.  I have to admit I got a pretty good laugh too when you were explaining the story.  But, thank you for being genuine and honest.  Also congratulations on your weight loss journey.  14 pounds is an awesome results in such a short time.  Thanks again for producing an entertaining and educational show.

Thank you so much for telling my story on your podcast. I am honored that you took the time to do that. Thanks also for the picture. Since I met you, I have been working so hard. I am doing what you said, “don’t say you are going to try, say you are doing it”. Thanks for pushing me to keep going. I now have a new English website

Hi Cliff,

Thanks you very much for answering my question regarding talking about myself on a podcast, your mission statement rang true to my reasons for creating this podcast.  Your answer has made me feel confident in my content and to carry on recording episodes.

As you requested here is the link to my podcast, it can be found here at http://www.positivehiv.info/hiv-podcast.html and on iTunes if you search for The HIV Podcast.

Thanks so much, Cliff for answering my question! About a year ago, I went crazy looking for a lav mic that would work with my iPhone - this is just what I was looking for! I don't know how you find these things, but that's why you're the Podcast Answer Man!

@Michael Hyatt it's a thrill to see that you've spoken up on here too - it's because of you that I listen to @Cliff Ravenscraft !

I really appreciate you following up with my question. Thanks again!

GSPN have you tried this mic with the BossJock App?  I would be very interested in getting one if it worked well with BossJock.

I'm personally not a big fan of the Rode mic. I bought one, hoping I could use it for short videos. The sound quality is great, but the cord is too short. :-(

@GSPN Haven't listened but will. Hope you recommend extension cable. I find the base cable is too short.

@GSPN I've been trying to find good lav mic info. Was going to ask around at and now look forward to hearing what you have to say.

@gsdimartino  I didn't experience any issue with the tests that I've done with it.  I'm a real fan of the Griffin iTalk app for $1.99 though. ;)

@Sabas Flores It was my honor to share your story Sabas.  I'm so thrilled to see the action you've taken in your life and I have no doubt that you are providing great motivation and inspiration for all those who know you.

@Chadeddy MY pleasure Chad.  How do I find these things? I'm connected to a vast network of fellow geeks. ;)

Cliff Ravenscraft

@joeconsford I have not yet tried it.  However, if you try the Apple Earbud/pods and the mic built into that works with bossjock, this smartLav will work as well.  Uses the same iOS mic plug built into the device.

Cliff Ravenscraft
Cliff Ravenscraft moderator

@Michael Hyatt The recommended use case here is for a pastor to record their sermon, an instructor to record their lecture, or a speaker to record their speech.  In these three cases, the smartLav would work great for going straight from the lapel to a smartphone in your pocket.

But I do think that the TRRS extension cable could make it possible for iOS recorded videos.  I may just order one to see. ;)

gsdimartino
gsdimartino

@Cliff Ravenscraft @gsdimartinoWell I used it a lecture I did with about 100 or so folks in the room. The audio is horrible so I cannot use it for anything.  I don't know if there was interference from the wireless mic set up from the convention or what.  I saw that you used it with another mic at one of your lectures.  Did the audio turn out okay?

@Cliff Ravenscraft @gsdimartino   I was also dissappointed with the rode rec app. It seems to crash a lot and do other things like losing my recording. I'll have to give the Griffin iTalk a try.

The extension cable does work. I did a bunch of research on this mic recently, and bought 2. I watched many YouTube videos showing the extension cables.

I just recorded some videos with the mic recently. Using 2 mics/2 iphones. Sounded ok. Easier setup then a boom mic overhead.

Would love to see best use settings. One of the videos recommended turning OFF iOS processing.

@gsdimartino Sorry to hear that you had an issue.  I did a podcast outside where I used the SmartLav. Check it out here: http://gspn.tv/pabl568.

I've had several other people email me to tell me that they purchased this and that it has worked great for recording their talks.

Perhaps it was something within the settings of the app you used to record.  If the mic is defective, you may want to contact Rhode.

Cliff Ravenscraft

@sukofamily @gsdimartino  Sorry to hear that.  I did one very lengthy test with the REC App from Rhode and it went well.  Here's a podcast episode devoted to it: http://gspn.tv/pabl568.

However, it it fails once, that's one too many times for my taste.

I've never had a problem with the Griffin iTalk app. ;)

@Ryan Gray, MD Thanks!  I'm sure Cliff and tribe would love to know your test results, (I know I would).  If you have a chance to try an A/B test and report back, I for one would really appreciate it!  This set-up is in my near future (especially with Cliff's endorsement)

Ryan Gray, MD
Ryan Gray, MD

@ShawnSmithMusic - I haven't tested. I just used them for the first time and liked the results.

I have two of them, so I can easily compare - one iPhone ON and one iPhone OFF. I wont be able to do that for a couple of days though as I'm out of town.

The iOS processing ON/OFF does not change the behavior of the app. The phone is fully functional and you can exit the app while it is recording.

ShawnSmithMusic
ShawnSmithMusic

@Ryan Gray, MD Thank you…really had me confused! Have you tested this yourself, Ryan?  Any difference?  Does it just disable the iPhone while the Rode Rec app is running?  I can't tell from the LE version (and no SmartLav to test with!)

Ryan Gray, MD
Ryan Gray, MD

The iOS processing is a setting in the Rode Rec app. There is one reviewer on youtube that recorded a whole review and then posted an update stating that with iOS processing off, he would recommend the mic, with it on, he wouldn't.

ShawnSmithMusic
ShawnSmithMusic

@Ryan Gray, MD Can you tell us what they meant by, "turning OFF iOS processing"?  Airplane mode?  Closing background apps?

EricDingler
EricDingler

@Michael Hyatt @Cliff Ravenscraft This will totally work.  I use two of these mice.  One on me and one on my wife we speak at events together.  We are able to sync the audio up in post with the video and the result is pretty great.  You can see a sample at www.ericdingler.com/ccca14

@ShawnSmithMusic @Michael Hyatt You are right.  I didn't see that it was converting it to two 3pin female ports.   Oh man..

Oh well, I actually can see a use for this, allowing you to take the TRRS jack of a Macbook and then having the ability to have Line In and Headphones out port. :)

In this case, if you hear that the Rode SC6 becomes available, please let me know. :)

ShawnSmithMusic
ShawnSmithMusic

@Cliff Ravenscraft @Michael Hyatt For $10, it's worth a shot!

Unless I'm reading it wrong, or it's linked to the wrong connector, I believe this connector is 4 pin TRRS male (going into the iPhone), but the female jacks are 3 pin TRS, which won't work with the 4 pin TRRS SmartLav.  From the title description of the splitter:  "4-Pin to 2x 3-Pin 3.5mm Headset Splitter"

I believe the "2x 3-Pin" female jacks are for standard 3.5mm 3- Pin headphones and 3.5mm 3- Pin mics like the popular ATR 3350 Lav mic:  http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR-3350-Omnidirectional-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B002HJ9PTO/ref=pd_cp_MI_0

I've been looking for a solution for 2 non-powered lav mics into an iPhone for a year.  Even kvconnection doesn't carry a 4 pin TRRS splitter:  http://www.kvconnection.com/category-s/8861.htm

I think that's what is so revolutionary about the Rode SC6:  2 Lav mics, NO battery (phantom) power needed, plus headphone monitoring.  (looks good on paper, anyway…)

But please let us know if that splitter works!  Specs are not the real-world.  (But I'll buy you a $10 cup of coffee if it works ;-)

ShawnSmithMusic
ShawnSmithMusic

@Cliff Ravenscraft @Michael Hyatt Hey Cliff - great mic!  fyi…I don't believe that splitter will work for 2 SmartLav's because the jacks need to be 4 post (TRRS) and I believe they are 3 post (TRS).  HOWEVER, Rode just released an SC6 adaptor which will give you 2 SmartLav inputs (recorded on the same channel) + headphones out!  Theyr'e not available in the U.S. yet, but keep your eyes pealed for this baby!: http://www.rodemic.com/accessories/sc6
