wemoRemote Controlled On Air Sign
I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner. However, it recently occurred to me that I could use one of those WeMo switches by Belkin to operate a plugged in On Air Light/Sign that I could place just outside my studio. In fact, I may place a second remote controlled light on the main level of the house so that the rest of the family will know, upstairs, when I am actually recording something.

I haven’t chosen which Recording / On Air light that I am going to go with. However, I am looking for something that will look really nice. I’ve been looking at this and this.

For those who prefer to go super low budget, I found this DIY On Air Light tutorial that shows you how you could make an On Air Light for less than $20.

Cliff,

It appears, from watching your live stream of this podcast, that you have on an iPad some kind of color-coded control panel for playing pre-recorded auido clips (e.g. intro, outro, segue, pre-corded interview, etc.).  I assume this allows you to insert such clips into the podcast live, obviating the need to do it in post-production, and thus saving a lot of time.

Am I right about all this?  And what is the software on your iPad that allows you to do this?

Thanks,

Mike

Cliff, I had no idea you are based out of Cincinnati. I'm located here, too and really enjoy your podcast. Always great information.

Hey Cliff, If you wanted to get all geeky about about your "On Air" sign, you could look at using IFTTT to automatically turn on the sign if you're using a WeMo device. The trigger could be a Google Calendar appointment.

Or super geeky...would be getting Philips Hue lights so you can change the colours for different times; On Air, Busy, On the Phone, In A Meeting, Free, or a colour to show that you're just sitting and admiring your awesome new studio ;)

@ShaneBlack  You know, i was thinking about having the Hue Light as a status light.  Something that I will seriously consider.  Thanks for the reinforcement of the idea. ;)

@Cliff Ravenscraft @ShaneBlack  I think it was two episodes ago, with Merlin Mann, that the Mac Power Users podcast was geeking out about the Hue Lights. They sound pretty awesome.

I was thinking about how to automate it. Something tied to an application running on your computer would be the smartest - something that is always open when you are recording - maybe your sound board or Skype?

@Ryan Gray, MD @Cliff Ravenscraft @ShaneBlack  I have different instances where I would need to use the light that I would prefer to do turn it on manually.

There are times that I will be recording podcasts from my normal setup and then times when I'm shooting videos in another section of my studio, etc. But still, I love love the idea of Hue.

The big thing is that I do want to do turn it on remotely from my studio.
