400 – Advice For Creating Your Own Mastermind Group

by Cliff Ravenscraft on April 16, 2015

I always love celebrating big milestones. I am excited to present this 400th episode of Podcast Answer Man. For this special occasion, I wanted to share the one thing that I believe can bring about the greatest potential for taking your business and/or your life to the next level.

I’ve talked, many times, in the past about my participation in mastermind groups. In this episode, I share my top advice for how you can go about creating your very own mastermind group.

Note: I mentioned that if you wanted to learn more about why I started the Podcast Mastermind organization, my experience with it and why I shut it down after two years, you can listen to episode 344.

Podcasting A to Z
Do you want to learn how to podcast but don’t know where to start? Podcasting A to Z is a four week online training course that walks you through each step in the process of setting up a podcast. You not only get step-by-step tutorials, but you also have the ability to get answers to all your questions during the four week session.

If you have been thinking about starting a podcast, this is the course for you. Just head over to http://PodcastingAtoZ.com for full details. I look forward to potentially working with you.

Upcoming Event Schedule
One of my favorite things about traveling to, and speaking at conferences, is meeting members of my community. I always make it a point to host a community meetup wherever I travel.

Below is a list of events that you might be interested in. If you can make it to any of these events, I’d love to have the opportunity to meet you. If you are not able to attend the event, but are in that area, I’d still love for you to come to the personal community meetup that I will host in that town.

  • Great episode Cliff! Thank you for the inside peek into your private mastermind and really showing how important it is to the business creative process for any entrepreneur! I look forward to attending one of your in-person mastermind events some day soon! Congrats on #400!!

  • Thank you Crystal. I’m thrilled that you enjoyed the episode and I look forward to seeing you at one of these future events. I hope you have a blessed day!

  • CraigHaworth1

Great stuff Cliff! Congrats on #400. Just coming out of Dan Miller’s mastermind, to free up time for me to start my own in my niche – and this was great input. I was furiously taking notes – especially valued the weekly agenda and the commitment agreement. Looking forward to the next 400 episodes!

  • This podcast couldn’t have come at a better time Cliff. A close friend and I have working on Mastermind group. This podcast was the icing on the cake for us. Thanks for all you do.

  • Great episode Cliff! There were so many takeaways. I’m in a great mastermind group – we are committed and supportive and do most of what your Green Room ‘contract’ asks. However the format is a little different and I’m going to propose a single hot-seat to them rather than the round table we do at present. Loved that you mentioned the Next Level Masterminds – I am still using the wisdom that was shared on that day in Dallas last year and would recommend the event to anyone needing a boost to their business. Finally, thank you for the Napoleon Hill 5 minutes – I’ve just got the book out again and will read it this weekend.

  • Hi Cliff. The timing of this episode was great. Getting involved with a mastermind group is high on my priority list. This episode lays out the details in conducting a well run group. My biggest challenge now is to start or find a group. Especially, the part where you mention to try and find someone ahead of you. I’ve been producing my Geekin’ On WDW podcast now for over a year consistently every week. Ready to take it to the next level! Thanks Cliff.

  • Curt, I hope that the advice that I provided here will help you once you find the right person or people to invite to be a part of your own group. Just know that not everyone in your group has to have a podcast. They can be just a little further down the road in other areas of business/life. πŸ˜‰

  • I’m so thrilled to know that you are still benefiting from the Next Level One Day Business Mastermind event. I need to get out Think and Grow Rich and go through that book again myself. πŸ˜‰

  • David, it thrills me to hear this feedback. Thank you for sharing and I wish you and your friend great success!!!!

  • Craig, that is awesome. I am thrilled to know that you picked up a lot of valuable insights from what I have shared from my own experience with mastermind groups. I wish you great success with yours and I’m honored to have you as a listener!

  • Cliff: I really enjoyed this episode and especially the Apollo 13 clips. This was the perfect follow-up to Pat Flynn’s talk at Social Media Marketing World on Masterminds as you were able to go into much more detail and share your own point of view. I have hosted two paid masterminds with my community so far and now have some additional ideas going forward on how to improve the structure. See you at Podcast Movement! ~Natalie

  • Natalie, thank you so much for the feedback about this episode. I look forward to seeing you Texas.

  • Enjoying the episode (recommended by Natalie) – Any chance you could add to the show notes your guidelines, and 60 minute flow? Great stuff, see ya in Fort Worth, soon.

Edit – Here is what I wrote down for reference:

Eliminated on missing 3rd meeting in a row
Eliminated if missing 1 per month, on 4th month of repeating
Confidentiality violation will also remove from group

    Meeting time = 60 minutes

10 min – Win of week (personal or professional)

    50 min – Hot Seat
    Hot Seat format

2 min – Share a Shared Resource with group (book, etc.)
short – State previous goal from last time in Hot Seat, did you accomplish it?
~30+ min – What I want to address this week in my business/life (goal, obstacle, etc.)
2 min – Commit to a goal in this area

  • Mark, This PDF should help… link: http://share.gspn.tv/aqUu/MastermindExpections.pdf

  • Thanks Cliff, that will come in handy!

  • My pleasure. I hope you have an amazing weekend!

  • Jordan Peterson

Great podcast Cliff! Thank you so much for sharing! πŸ™‚

  • I am so thrilled to hear that this was a timely message for you Jordan. I wish you great success with the formation and launch of your mastermind.
