455 – Identity – The Importance of Knowing Who You Are

by Cliff Ravenscraft on June 24, 2016

In last week’s episode, I talked about how excited I was to be heading off, this week, for the Tony Robbins event called Unleashing The Power Within. I also shared how excited I was about learning from one of his information products that I had purchased, called Creating Lasting Change.

After hearing last week’s episode, a concerned listener wrote to me saying that he was alarmed and that the first part of that episode sounded so unlike me that it made his skin crawl. The concerned listener then cautioned me, saying that Tony teaches NLP, which has been debunked many times, and that I’d do well to save my hard-earned cash for things that have true value, not on pseudo science.

Knowing the person that sent me this feedback, I’m convinced of the kind and caring heart in which this advice was given. The feelings expressed in this feedback are fully aligned with the mindset I once had on this issue, years ago, when a few folks had recommended that I read the book “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.

The main focus of this episode is how my thinking has changed, over the years, as it relates to my comfort level in learning things from those who may also teach some things that I very much disagree with. I’m so excited to have had my great friend, Ray Edwards, join me in a conversation about this topic.

As for the title of this week’s episode? That comes from one of Tony Robbin’s many teachings that I do believe in strongly. A teaching that has the has the power to profoundly change the lives of those who embrace it.

I sincerely hope that you’ll enjoy this episode.

Cliff, yes, you are an athlete. You are absolutely rocking it with your riding and workouts. Consider taking care with the endurance athletics though. If you overdo it too much with the endurance events, recovery can take a very long time. If you come to love endurance events too much, it is possible to become a dopamine junkie (your body produces lots of dopamine while doing these events), which can affect your relationships.

  • Cliff & Ray. Reminds me of listening to George & Jerry Seinfeld sitting at the diner talking about this and that. (except yours is not a “show about nothing”!) Very entertaining and I grabbed a ton of advice from your convo. Haven’t read Napoleon Hill in 15 years but I gotta go back and re-read to see what I missed! Thanks guys!

  • Thank you for the encouraging feedback. So thrilled that you’ve pulled way so much value from the conversation. I am about to pull out Think & Grow Rich again very soon. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Thank Rich. No worries. I have a commitment to keep “mixing things up.” ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Cliff & Ray, another demonstration of your love for God and His people. You two are incredibly transparent and I look forward every week to listening to each of your podcasts. I have been praying about what path God wants to take in my career and each week you give me another perspective to pray about as I wait for His guidance, and my heart. Also, Cliff thank you for the inspiration to exercise and live longer for my children as I am walking everyday, 2 miles even with double hip replacements and a couple of bad discs. Finally, Ray, praying for your recovery and also praying for a cure.

  • Paul, thank you so much for the encouraging feedback. Congratulations on your decision to walk 2 miles every day. That is awesome. I pray for you to gain some clarity on your new path and that you’ll have the courage to take the first step and to follow it up with massive action.
