488 – Could Working For Free Hinder The Growth of Your Business?

by Cliff Ravenscraft on February 9, 2017

This week’s episode is a bit unique. I was recently watching a SnapChat story from my friend, Sarah Stahl, where she was talking about how difficult it is to grow your own business. I can certainly relate to experiencing the struggles that one goes through when getting a business off the ground. However, Sarah shared that she had been working on her business for four years and that she was still struggling to figure out what next steps to take. This week’s episode is almost like listening in on a coaching call between myself and Sarah.

Awesome episode Cliff! It really got me thinking.

I am currently at the very beginning of my entrepreneurial journey and am struggling with finding time to develop my online presence while keeping my full-time job (which meets our financial needs but we aren’t entirely comfortable. My wife is a stay-at-home mom) and being there for my family.

This episode has really helped me in understanding the mindset that I need to have as I transition from being employed to becoming an unemployable entrepreneur.

Thank you for everything you do.

  • Wow, Cliff. What a powerful episode. I loved your idea of doing a podcast episode of a coaching call. It’s something I am sure many of us would love you to do again.
I so empathised with Sarah’s position, and also the position you found yourself at the start of your journey those years ago.
The thing is, that so many people in this area are struggling – more than often we realise. From the outside we can see the professional website, the smiling faces on the photos, the social media updates and more. On the surface we see success, but underneath it all, are fragile human beings struggling with self esteem and confidence, and who have almost lost hope.
When this happens, we stop dreaming and believing. We stop working on the things that will make a difference. And sometimes the things we feel passionate about (like helping and blessing others) almost feel like a burden.
The “solopreneur” career is challenging – no question. But I think, being able to discuss the fears and struggles with others is absolutely vital. Thanks so much Sarah and Cliff for your transparency and honesty. I found the whole episode so moving and what I needed to hear.

It’s so refreshing to hear I’m not the only one still struggling with finding that right place that I’m supposed to be in for my business. I turned 63 this year, have been an entrepreneur a long time and quite frankly I’ve been dealing a lot lately feeling like a failure because I am so talented in helping other people with their business but I don’t seem to be able to apply that to my own self. I tried to create something very unique, something that was partially a way to serve others and an organic approach to creating demand for my services in my community. I have been very successful in creating a very influential platform in my community, I am very well known in my community, my business is very appreciated in my community because my business is really about building Community, supporting local, getting people to participate in whats going in locally in every way. I’ve also created and executed events for my community that have become Signature Events and have given me great exposure and credibility yet I still find myself not being profitable in my business and not being successful from a monetary standpoint in my business. My passion is to be the go to person for businesses in small towns across the US on how to market to their community and what motivates locals to buy locally. I have become an expert in this and my platforms and followings prove that. I see so many out there selling they have the answers to make your business successful online and they have no real fan base or footprint using social media. I have that but can’t find how to maintain this and also find the best way to make that profitable. I’ve been at this for 5 years working 60 to 70 hours a week serving my community. I think there are more people like me than I thought! Thank you for all you do Cliff!

  • Awesome Ben. I am so thrilled that you found so much value in this episode. I wish you great success as you work toward your online business goals.

  • Thank you for this very encouraging feedback Ian. I am thrilled that you enjoyed this episode so much.

  • Hazel, I wish I had more time to learn more about what you are doing, what you offer, and how you can monetize your platform more successfully. However, I just got bakc from a week long cruise with my wife and I’m doing a lot for a final marketing push for my next session of Podcasting A to Z that launches this Monday.

After that, I’m off to San Diego for a speaking gig and then back home for another session of Podcasting A to Z.

I have a feeling that future episodes (starting with 490) may have a lot to do with MAKING A PROFIT from our Business Pursuits. I’m currently re-reading Thou Shall Prosper by Rabbi Daniel Lapin. It’s a book that I highly recommend.

Thank you for your reply Cliff. I am one of your former students. I appreciate the heck out of you and I will get the book you referred. Right now I am in the midst of hospice for my mom in TX. I know this season has slowed me down and I hope to transition to a place of peace in my heart to let go of the torment I have put myself through for years trying to maneuver my entrepreneur journey to get in the right placed I was meant to be, thinking that would bring me the joy and prosperity I believed went with that. Lord bless you and your family Cliff!

  • Hazel, I remember working with you. I am so sorry to hear about your mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family during this very difficult time.
