By Far The Best Podcast Promo I've Seen To Date!

by Cliff Ravenscraft on November 16, 2009

podcast-consultantWhen consulting with my clients for audio podcasting, I often tell them about the importance of using other social networking tools and broadcast channels to get the word out about your brand. I think it’s great to focus a lot of attention on your audio podcast. I certainly prefer to consume audio content as I have more time that I devote to audio than I can any other form of media. However, it’s important that we audio podcasters not neglect written blog posts, like this one. There’s great value in using video, occasionally, to continue to draw an audience to your audio podcast.

Another valuable tool for promoting your audio podcast is creating a short promo that can be used by your audience to promote your podcast. It is with great enthusiasm that I share this YouTube video with you. It is a perfect example of what we podcasters should be doing to branch out and tell others about our audio content.

Here’s the video:

As if I weren’t impressed enough by their video promo, displayed prominently on the home page of their website, I was also impressed by the fact that they took time to create custom subscription graphics that fit the theme of their show.

I absolutely love the rss feed button in the wheel barrel and the tape measure wrapped around the iTunes Logo. Folks, if you are serious about your podcast and building a brand around what you are doing, don’t be afraid to invest in your website. It’s the first impression you’ll give to a majority of your audience!

Podcasters take notice Brian and Paul of The Handy Guys Podcast! They are doing several things right!

  • HandyGuyBrian - I get excited every time I see a podcaster hit 100 episodes. My hats are off to you my friend! You have earned the great success you have had.

As for that six figure deal... Keep at it my friend. Those advertisers are going to be there before you know it!

I know people have been saying that since day one of podcasting. But seriously, Leo Leporte has arleady made 2.5 million this year.

And well, I've made a great deal in sponsorships and I don't even seek out advertising.. -LOL

Love your goals for building community! You're doing everything right on this journey my friend!
  • The True Value sponsorship is one of many that we have had. The True Value thing will be a couple more shows segments through the end of the year. We need some way to pay for the cool gear upgrades! And yes, we will go past 100. No 6 figure deals yet but maybe someday.

The home improvement and DIY space is interesting from a podcasting perspective. There are no other active podcasts in this space that are specifically produced for the medium. There are some syndicated radio shows re-purposed for podcasting, They are fine if you want the news, weather and traffic reports in your podcast! Yes, some of our listeners have no idea about podcasts. We probably get a higher percentage of web plays than most podcasts, just a guess.

Also, our shows are timeless in a sense. Sure, we have fall, winter spring themed shows. The old shows continue to get plays depending on the season or the topic. We talked about repairing a particular dishwasher on one episode, we get tons of play on that show every day. We did a show on making a garden trellis. That show spikes in plays in the spring and early summer. In the spring/summer shows mowers and lawn care are popular.

We may branch out into video and have already invested in the hardware and software gear to do so. The post production time is significant compared to the podcast.

When we started we wanted to produce a quality show. Our audio quality is good but not great. We are using condenser mics and they pick up every little stray noise. We are upgrading to the PR-40 in the very near future. Our first show with the PR-40 will be probably episode 91 or 92.

What does 2010 have in store? We want to build a deeper community. Allow more interaction among fans. Allow fans to submit their own content. Build more interactivity. We want to do something that is a step, or many steps, ahead of what others are doing. Forums are so 1990s, they grew out of BBSs. Twitter is too limiting and doesn't build community. Facebook? Too broad. Blogging? Blogging creates islands of information. Its gona be something completely different in many ways yet really cool and familiar. The Handyguys' audio and video will just be one aspect, a drop in the bucket of the larger community if the ideas take off. Web 3.0 I think some are calling it.

Thanks Cliff for the inspiration and guidance.
  • ahhhh, I'm just jealous =)
  • Brian, I'm not sure I follow where you are coming from. It seems that they have a little more than 6,000 people in their audience and they've already successfully produced 89 episodes.

I've not listened to their podcast, but I do know that they are looking to take their audio gear to the next level. (wink wink from an inside source) ;)
  • Great podcast- motivated by corporate sponsorships from True Value hardware stores

I can't imagine their audience even understanding what a podcast is let alone downloading them...but hey! it is what it is. I would be surprised to see this podcast go past 100 episodes.
  • Subscribed! :-)

Love the sound quality on those mics, are those Shure SM7B or Heils? Can't really tell...
