The home improvement and DIY space is interesting from a podcasting perspective. There are no other active podcasts in this space that are specifically produced for the medium. There are some syndicated radio shows re-purposed for podcasting, They are fine if you want the news, weather and traffic reports in your podcast! Yes, some of our listeners have no idea about podcasts. We probably get a higher percentage of web plays than most podcasts, just a guess.

Also, our shows are timeless in a sense. Sure, we have fall, winter spring themed shows. The old shows continue to get plays depending on the season or the topic. We talked about repairing a particular dishwasher on one episode, we get tons of play on that show every day. We did a show on making a garden trellis. That show spikes in plays in the spring and early summer. In the spring/summer shows mowers and lawn care are popular.

We may branch out into video and have already invested in the hardware and software gear to do so. The post production time is significant compared to the podcast.

When we started we wanted to produce a quality show. Our audio quality is good but not great. We are using condenser mics and they pick up every little stray noise. We are upgrading to the PR-40 in the very near future. Our first show with the PR-40 will be probably episode 91 or 92.

What does 2010 have in store? We want to build a deeper community. Allow more interaction among fans. Allow fans to submit their own content. Build more interactivity. We want to do something that is a step, or many steps, ahead of what others are doing. Forums are so 1990s, they grew out of BBSs. Twitter is too limiting and doesn’t build community. Facebook? Too broad. Blogging? Blogging creates islands of information. Its gona be something completely different in many ways yet really cool and familiar. The Handyguys’ audio and video will just be one aspect, a drop in the bucket of the larger community if the ideas take off. Web 3.0 I think some are calling it.

I can’t imagine their audience even understanding what a podcast is let alone downloading them…but hey! it is what it is. I would be surprised to see this podcast go past 100 episodes.
