212 Podcast Answer Man – BlogWorld And New Media Expo NYC 2011 Talk – The GSPN Story – Building A Community That Pays The Bills #BWENY

by Cliff Ravenscraft on June 4, 2011

As I mentioned in episode 211 of Podcast Answer Man, I had an amazing time at BlogWorld & New Media Expo NYC 2011. Many of you, who were unable to attend the event, had expressed a desire for me to record video of my talk to share with you.

I am happy to announce that I have been given permission from the BlogWorld organizers to share the recording of my talk with you and that I have finished processing the video. I hope that you find my story entertaining, educational, encouraging, and inspirational.

Thank you all for making it possible for me to follow my passion and make a very decent living doing it!

Podcast Answer Man related facts:
I used my Kodak Zi8 camera to record the video of my talk. For the audio, I used my Sony UWP-V6 wireless mic system that was brought directly from the wireless receiver into the audio input of the camera. For the post here on the site, I uploaded a HD version of my video to YouTube to embed here on this page. For the podcast feed, I created an iPhone version of this video which is uploaded to my Libsyn media hosting account which enclosed in my podcast rss feed.

Looking For A Way To Manually Turn Of Video Player In PowerPress
If anyone knows how to turn off the media player for PowPress on individual posts, please do let me know in the comments section. I know how to manually change the placement of the player to the another location in the post. However, on video episodes, I would much prefer not having any player at all for the enclosed video file since I am embedding the YouTube version above.

  • Is the video player, like the man behind the curtain?

  • Cliff,

Neither myself nor one of my clients that I have setup with a video podcast is having this issue. I’ve attached some images of my Powerpress settings so that maybe you can see what is different between mine and yours. With these settings I am able to insert a video file into Media URL box thus inserting it in my feed via enclosure and without auto inserting any Powerpress video players.

Check your video player options to the left under the Powerpress settings (first image) making sure that you don’t have either of the two players selected.

Next, check your basic settings – Episode Entry Options (image two) and notice the Embed Field option. This is not something I’m using despite the checked box but it might be an interesting feature for you to explore, allowing you to embed YouTube while eliminating the Powerpress player.

Finally, compare your settings in the Media Appearance tab to mine (image three). Notice that I have under “Display Media & Links” the Disable bubble checked and notice that it says the “Player will NOT appear in your post.”

The Powerpress settings do not make any of this very clear which is obvious cause you’ll notice that I have the Media Player – Display Player check box right below the one just mentioned, checked. Heck, it’s difficult to even write it out clearly lol.

Let me know if this helps. I assume that on any video you post, especially to your feed, you would want these same settings. It seems that you want to use the YouTube embed player in all instances so this should work across the board for you. Note that this still allows me to have an audio (mp3) file placed into the Media URL for each episode and get the 1pixelout player automatically placed for me in each post. I use them Powerpress shortcode to display an HTML5 friendly player.

However if this changes things for the way you display your audio player, then dig into the Embed Field option that I mentioned above (image two) and see if that will also work for what you are trying to achieve.

You can see an example of my results in this post from The Podcasters Studio: http://thepodcastersstudio.com/tps-ep-18-video-interview-at-podcamp-philly-2009-with-the-mike-tech-show/ Ignore the blown-out audio from my mic, the guy running cam that day forgot his headphones, this was the first run and gun of the day and you can hear that it cost us. But in error comes good content for the show…don’t forget critical gear!;)

    Stay healthy,

    Ray

  • LOL – Yeah, sort of… 😉

  • Ray, thanks.. Looking at your settings, you have the Media Player disabled by default so that you would need to manually enter [powerpress] to each post. That would be great if I didn’t already have thousands of episodes on seven different sites before using PowerPress. So I had to turn this on to pick up the player to auto add the player to all those old players “automatically.”

Good news is that there is a brand new feature add custom embed code to “REPLACE” the included player(s). However, with this feature, I have got it to where it will add the YouTube Video, but not remove the default player. The folks over at BluBrry are going to help me troubleshoot it and get it fixed this week.

Thanks again for taking the time to share the screen caps of your settings.

  • Ah yes, one critical factor I forgot to include while writing my previous comment at 2am…I use the Audio Player settings to automate the insertion of the 1pixelout player when an enclosure is inserted into the post (see attached image).

This allows you to place audio or video into the Powerpress Media URL box and get the audio player for mp3’s set as enclosures as well as videos inserted as an enclosure without the Blubrry player.

  • Yep, I used to use the 1pixel out player as well to do just that. However, I decided that I wanted to reduce the number of plugins I was using and I liked the ease of adding “Podcast Answer Man” text into the PowerPress Player. 🙂 As I said, the folks at BluBrry have build a workaround and I hope to get that ugly default video player off soon. 😉

  • Yes, I like the text branding in the player as well but it was the one compromise I had to make in order to give people an html5 friendly player which I think is better than making them open a new window with the quicktime player only (according to audience feedback). Looking forward to the day when we get an html5 audio player on the level of the 1pixelout player. Good luck with your fix.

  • Thanks. I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of it as soon as I have a chance to connect with Angelo or Micheal from the folks at BluBrry/PowerPress

  • The last 5 minutes of this video were the best.  Very encouraging, Cliff.

  • Thanks so much for watching the video. Now I’m trying to remember what I said in those last five minutes. 🙂 LOL

  • Cliff, that was the *BEST* session I attended, hands down. Just sent you email to hopefully get started on my own little podcasting journey and I can’t do it without you :)! Keep rocking our world with your podcasts!!

  • Wow! Thank you so much! That is so encouraging. I just responded to your email and look forward to helping you launch an amazing new podcast!

  • Absolutely. I’m sure I’ll even be throwing a gspn.tv community member while in LA 🙂
