Great stuff! I have a background in radio. We are planning to set up an onlinetalk show webcast station. The InKeeper looks to be just what we need to make our setup work. We will order the unit through your link.

Thanks for the great info.

AIFF tends to be used more on Mac while WAV tends to be used more on Windows but the format (Audio Interchange File Format) is a standard not Apple proprietary format. It was co-developed by Apple.

Okay, so Stephanie's "first gen" iPhone didn't do this on the 1st two recordings she did, but it did show up one time on her third episode. Just 1 time compared to like 8 times on my phone in my last recording.

I just got off the phone with Griffin Tech Support.

They have heard about this issue. They said that from everyone they've talked to, simply deleting the software and reinstalling it has cleared this up for them.

This does not sound like a fix to me. Especially since it's happening on two different iPhones that we have.

However, I'll play along. I'm deleting the iTalk Application off both our iPhones and off iTunes.

I'll download it via iTunes this time, instead of via the 3G connection over the iPhone.

I'll keep you posted!

I'm sorry the iTalk may need a software upgrade. What's weird, is this: Even though my 1st gen iPhone doesn't have as good of a microphone as the 3g iPhone, I haven't had that buzz/glitch noise appear at all. I've recorded a few 5+ minute plus test podcasts with mine, and no glitches yet.

I hope they can track down the root cause of the glitches, because this App's potential is very exciting!

Hi Cliff. Thanks for putting together this Google Analytics screencast episode. Nicely done my friend. I like how you were able to show what to do within Google Analytics, while still having yourself talking us through it in the corner.

Although I have been using Google Analytics, a bit, for about six months now, I wasn't using it to it's fullest. Thanks for highlighting all of the great info a blogger, podcaster, or any website owner, could learn from this free application from Google!

If you want to use a cell phone and record the conversation, I'd suggest using a free audio conference bridge. Something like TalkShoe.

Basically, you dial into the number. You have the other person dial into the number, you press the commands to start recording and their software records the audio of the call.

Don't want to make your interviewee call in? If you have three way calling, you can call the conference bridge, have it start recording. Put that call on hold, dial the person you'll be talking to and then conference those calls using three way calling.

Hope this helps!

I think some people use that title for shock value. People hear the title and will attend the session to hear the reasons why podcasting is dead.

Podcasting is going strong but one downfall is trying to find the right podcasts to (listen to/watch) in a sea of clutter. There could potentially be some great podcasts out there that I will never find. That's the only part that bothers me about new media.

Wayne,

I'm not sure I understand... As far as I know, the new Revolution Themes ARE FREE! As far as I can tell, you can download any or all of the new themes for free. However, there is simply no "support" available for learning how to get the theme to do what it is supposed to do with "your" content without either 1 year or lifetime support membership. The support "<em>IS OPTIONAL</em>."

Have a look at this screen capture from the website. Look at the area I highlighted.
<img src="http://gspn.tv/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/free.jpg" alt="" />

I think I missed something in all of the Revolution2 excitement over the themes being released early. I had read about the support subscription plans that the designers were offering, but I thought that was optional. And I thought that the new themes being "Open Source" mean that the themes themselves would be free. Yes, I know, silly me, but I thought (incorrectly) that "Open Source" = free.

Oh well, your blog entry here helped clarify it (especially after I looked all over the RevolutionTwo site for Download links. Their new themes still look cool, but it will be after Christmas before I can look to using them.

I'm glad your blog post spelled things out more clearly than what I was understanding at RevolutionTwo. I'll have you in mind Cliff, for when I am able to make the jump. Please keep us posted on the Podcast Answer Man podcast when you, or someone you know of, starts using one of these new themes.

Cliff, these new themes look Awesome. Although I purchased the previous WP Revolution theme (and hope to configure it for my main Voice-over site), I hope to use one of these new open source themes for my pain podcast site, and a different one for my wife's business website.

If I run into troubles, and my budget allows, I will definitely be contacting you to set up one-on-one consulting Cliff!

Podcasting dead? Not bloody likely. And even though podcasting has a way to go, it is becoming "established media" in many circles. And whether-or-not people realize they don't need an iPod to hear podcasts, "Podcasts" is the name for this media that is going to stick (no matter how hard Leo Laporte tries to push "Netcasts" as the term. LOL).

I can't wait to hear other thoughts on your article Cliff.

I think you are right.
My experience with this is the following: I write reviews of podcasts and
1- I see new podcasts come into existence all the time
2- I see the overall quality rise quickly, especially in the bottom-end (meaning fewer amateurish podcasts)
3- I see an increase in my podcast reviews and in reviews on other sources
4- Since I am especially interested in the educational and informative podcasts, I can only add that this makes so much sense: podcast is the ideal medium for passing on knowledge and information. Cheaper, more accessible and more easy to apply and use than its alternatives.

Robert, thanks for the feedback. I've sold quite a few of these recorders and so far, I've not had any of my podcast consultant clients or my average equipment order customers complain of any such issue.

I'm not saying that no such problem exists. Is it possible that this is occurring with high capacity sd cards? I've noticed a few slight issues with those types of cards in many different devices.

Overall, the Marantz PMD 620 is a great unit. However, since the Edirol R-09HR came out, I can not imagine recommending anything but the Edirol in this price range. It is simply amazing!

This recorder has a problem with the firmware update. Certain types of SD memory it simply does not like, these including Transcend and Kingston. Any file over several minutes in length (aren't they all) will not play on your PC until you go back and try to play the file on the recorder itself first. When you do this, a small window comes saying 'restore' only then the file will play on your PC (Most of the time). Tech support was of no help. Only recommended we don't use these brands.
They also say they have not heard of the problem before. However, if the problem is not known, then how does the recorder know to 'restore' the file when you try to play it? This 'restore' function MUST be written into the latest firmware update to happen. Naughty, naughty, being deceptive to the customer...
I am not discouraging anyone from getting this, it's just that if a problem exists, (and it's known by the manufacturer) they have to correct it, or advise to not purchase some types of memory before you make your purchase. Get Sandisk only for this...

Some technical information:

Careful since they have a bunch of lawsuits against Odeo management. Your embedded MP3's will not play once they go flatline.

Found a generator for the Yahoo player called Easylistener. Has several options and styles to chose from.

http://next.yahoo.net/archives/32/easylistener

"Easylistener is a Flash music player which can literally play any page on the web. Simply point it at your favorite music blog, RSS feed or playlist document and it will crawl that URL and start playing back any mp3s it finds."

Also I think the example player is showing the last generated, so be ready for an autoplay.

Cliff, thanks for posting this. Very helpful.

http://ericzhang.com/mp3.php simple play/stop player

odeo has a darker option. I found searching the web: If you don't like pink, there is a darker version. You just have to replace _gray with _black in the second line of the code.

http://www.varal.org/media/niftyplayer/ simple player

these are a few of the different ones I've seen while searching.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is so great Cliff! I decided to go with the Google one myself. I really didn't think it could possibly be as easy as it seemed, but I was wrong. I'm adding the 6 Girls Night In Radio ones right now but the *gulp* 350 Sims 2 Challenges podcasts will take awhile. It's easy enough though that I think it will be worth it for the ease of use of the listeners. Thanks again! This is awesome!

The <> can also be for chapter markers. If you have a long recording with several topics, you can place a marker at each new topic. That way, if someone can't listen to a 30 minute mp3 all at once, or they aren't interested in that topic, they just click to the next chapter.

I don't use any of these three myself. I use WordPress on all my pages and so I use the Plugin mentioned.

I did this as research for consulting clients. I leave the decision up to them based upon the benefits and drawbacks mentioned.

I have to second Rachel's recommendations about Memeo. No, I don't work for them (or for Tanagra, their old company name). Memeo is the solution to "I meant to do it." Set it and forget it. (Although note that the initial backup can take "forever," depending on how many files need to be protected.)

Memeo has saved my bacon numerous times. Even a complete hard drive failure on my wife's machine (although a nuisance) was uneventful data-wise -- nothing was lost. Once all of the software and drivers were reinstalled, Memeo restored everything in a matter of 75 minutes. (That sounds like a lot of time, but my wife's machine has boatloads of music and family photos.)

We have legit copies of Memeo on all our machines -- except for my Ubuntu laptop. Rachel, put in a good word with your bosses about coming up with a Linux/Debian/Ubuntu equivalent.

Great show, I'll add some Zune links like you showed. I've never been able to get any of my four podcasts listed into the Zune podcast directory, no matter how many times I've tried. Do you have to be a name brand podcast to get listed there? Any help, suggestions, email addresses of those at Zune who could look into it for me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You can also create what we call a Zune Deep-Link into your podcast page if you have a podcast that is already in the Zune Podcast Directory. To get this link go to this page: http://social.zune.net/links/ZuneLinks.aspx and do a search for your podcast to find the deep-link for use on your website.

Thanks,

My company, Memeo, addresses exactly the concerns that are raised in this blog. All too often people commit to backing up their data regularly, but never do (I am just as guilty of this). Our software solves this problem by including a unique feature as part of our backup tool that will instantaneously backup your files without any prompting. So the moment you save/modify/add a file it is backed up to any destination you like, whether that is an external hard drive, USB drive, iPod, FTP site, Network drive, etc. Memeo thinks the best strategy for a backup plan is to have both an external hard drive and online storage. So just in case your computer and your back up drive is stolen or broken Memeo recommends using a secure off-site backup option (which they also provide). It is the best of both worlds, fast local backup and safe, online backup.

Data loss is always a painful thing. At IDrive, we provide secure online backup for situations such as this. Also, if you need your data restored FAST, we have a service where we can overnight you a hard-drive with all your files on it, then you just mail the hard-drive back when you're done. So give www.IDrive.com a try. 2GB accounts are totally free. 150GB accounts are $4.95/mo.

From my limited knowledge in the area of RAID I know there are several different settings for RAID.

One is to combine the storage of all the devices so that they show up as one large drive on your Operating System. This option is what I believe Leo was using, but I may be wrong. I do know that on this setting if your RAID card goes down you lose all your data on all the drives.

Another is where you have at least 2 drives (or more) with the exact same storage capacity and they show up on your Operating System as 1 drive with the size of one of the single drives. The reason it only has the space of one of the drives is because it mirrors all the data onto all the drives attached so if one of them goes down or your RAID card goes down you do not lose any data. This is the backup (maybe there are more) setting of RAID. It is basically to keep you safe if one of the drive's die.

That's my knowledge of RAID. I'm sure there are other ways that RAID works but those are the 2 I know about. I have an uncle who was using the first setting and lost a bunch of data so now he is using the second one for backup's.

I forgot to mention other ways I also backup. Of course I use CD/DVD's to start files, I also use a USB key to keep a copy of a password protected and encrypted password database that has so many passwords that are so long I couldn't tell you them if you forced me.

A true and critical backup should always off site via physically. transporting it or backing up online. The "backups" I have at home or more for opps moments as if my primary hardware goes bad but if my house caught on fire, etc. it wouldn't make a difference.

I haven't noticed any of those Jungle Disk issues someone else mentioned. Of course I don't backup everything via Jungle disk that would take forever and cost more but I do backup about 2-3 gigs worth of stuff. The cost is very minimal but I have always said if you lost your primary copy almost all backup solutions will be a bargain.

The Drobo's do two things really well:
* they isolate you from the complexity of RAID (which they are using, of course), through proprietary extensions to the RAID model
* they know how to charge an arm and a leg for a solution that is anything but original. It is VERY pricey

Having said this, you can use Drobo's to achieve data security: you would have to buy two of them, plus two of their Ethernet addons; equip them with roughly equivalent disk space; store them in physically separate locations (so that one disaster cannot destroy both of them) that both have high-speed Internet access (and I do mean high-speed); and then use their web update model to keep both boxes in sync. Expensive, but it is safe.

At home, I am running a server (Windows 2003, but you could use any technology for that). All 3 machines on our network are backed up to that server every night. I keep backup copies of "static" material (e.g. older pictures, the bulk of the mp3 library, etc.) on two sets of DVD's, one set is kept out of house. The server uses Mozy to run a backup of frequently changing data every night into "the cloud". I regard this combination as reasonably safe.

Not to harp on it, but Wikipedia has a great article on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID" rel="nofollow">RAID</a>. To quote the entry:<blockquote>RAID systems with redundancy continue working without interruption when one, or sometimes more, disks of the array fail, although they are vulnerable to further failures. When the bad disk is replaced by a new one the array is rebuilt while the system continues to operate normally. Some systems have to be shut down when removing or adding a drive; others support hot swapping, allowing drives to be replaced without powering down. RAID with hot-swap drives is often used in high availability systems, where it is important that the system keeps running as much of the time as possible.
RAID is not a good alternative to backing up data. Data may become damaged or destroyed without harm to the drive(s) on which it is stored. For example, part of the data may be overwritten by a system malfunction; a file may be damaged or deleted by user error or malice and not noticed for days or weeks; and of course the entire array is at risk of catastrophes such as theft, flood, and fire.</blockquote>

I have to say something.

RAID was never meant to be a backup solution. It is a solution for redundancy/high availability. RAID (not the same thing as a drobo) keeps things <em>running</em>. Drives are more likely to fail than the data sub-system, IDE, SCSI, SATA. So RAIDs, just keep your data <strong>available</strong>, not as backup/archives. A drobo is just a way to have lots of room for data. Anyone that things their data is "safe" on a drobo by itself has been mislead. I use JungleDisk, but you can use anything that can be located off site. Tapes, external drives, Iomega Jazz drives (or whatever) are just a part of a smart solution. RAID keeps your data available, backups keep your data secure.

Make copies. Put them somewhere else. Data safe.
Use RAID. Data available.

I bought jungle disk hoping that I would have more ability to automate backups. My experience with JungleDisk has not been all that positive. It does create a drive letter for you, which is kind of cool. It's painfully slow, though.

Also, browsing your files is not all that simple. It uses whacky naming conventions, whereas a piece of software like S3 Bucket Explorer will let you name the fulders/buckets whatever you want.

The problem with S3 Bucket Explorer -- as slick as it is -- is that it does not provide a drive letter for you to integrate with your backup solution(s). All operations have to be manual...at least for the time being (even though they promised the backup/sync feature back in early 08 and it never happened).

I also have tried Carbonite. It has the flat annual rate going for it, though I suspect that's a ruse to get new customers and then jack up the price -- after all, who's going to want to back up all their data again once it's off-site? I have yet to find a software bundle that is not ugly and slow when it comes to recovering your files.

As for JungleDisk, getting that monthly bill from Amazon Web Services can hurt a little bit, but you have to view it as a security investment. I also use SyncBack locally. It sounds like we have pretty much the same setup, Cliff.

Even given all that, I prefer S3 Bucket Explorer since i can just drag a folder and tell it to overwrite all similar files. It works like Windows Explorer, so there's no learning curve. There's no whacky 24-character hashes before my folder name.

Good luck!

I current do three different backups. Time Machine for the daily, "Whoops" I didn't mean to delete the file" situations. I also to a SuperDuper! backup about once a week on a firewire drive so I will have a bootable full backup and finally I also use Jungle Disk using Amazon S3 for those really important files that would practically bring down my business if I lost that stuff and had nothing else. It's important to have the most important and critical things stored remotely.

I've been using something called SuperDuper! for backing up my MacBook Pro. It's creates a bootable backup of my hard drive so if this one every fails, I have a fresh back up ready to go. It has a smart back up feature which will only copy those files which are modified since the last back up. It has the ability to schedule when you start the backup and if you want to get really geeky it's even scriptable.

For the other machines in the house, I'm thinking about getting a time capsule and just letting them use that.

I don't know. I think it showed some of the things that the PC does.....

I'm a PC.... I study genes.... Major laboratories run use PC's.... Windows servers are powerful...

I'm a PC... I broadcast.... I have affordable and professional sound engineering software programs that are rival that of the MAC equivalent.

I'm a PC... I turn Doooo into energy.... Windows servers are pretty powerful...

I'm a PC... I'm connected to a billion others world-wide... Okay... so are macs, but a strong suit of Windows has been it's widespread adoption.. I still watch all the tech gadget shows... "There is no mac version available" is still the most used phrase when reviewing new products.

I'm a PC... I'm more affordable!!!!!

I think this is the first step in the right direction for them.

I like the mac vs. pc ads. I did NOT like the Bill Gates & Jerry Seinfeld ads. The new PC ad is okaya, but I agree with Winnie, it doesn't say anything about what it does for the those people. It would be helpful to hear why they use a PC and what they like about it.t

I walked by some huge video displays in Times Square today which featured the "I'm a PC" ads, for example, "I'm a PC, and a doctor". I think highlighting the omnipresence of the Windows PC does nothing to show its advantages over the Mac, which are debatable. I don't think it shows any originality on the part of Microsoft, just that they are finally reacting to Apple's very successful ad campaign. I'm not sure if it's generated as much in sales as Apple would like us to believe, but it's fun and highlights the weaknesses of "Wintel".

Now that I have used both a Mac and a PC, I think the user experience is probably better on a Mac, while the Windows "run on any PC" strategy is its greatest strength and weakness. I did have a horrible experience with Vista installed on a new laptop with the vendor's added software. When I reinstalled with "plain" Vista Home Premium and just the applications I need, Vista runs like a champ. Too bad the average user doesn't know how to do that, or want to go through the hassle.

The 2nd one with the family eating.. I could only take about 2 minutes of that ad. Way too long. I like the last one "I'm a PC". The Mac commercial was better IMO.

I don't agree with you. I don't like this direct bashing, never have. The brilliance of the Mac vs. PC ads is that they show the difference between the two, shows where they are better. These PC ads show nothing about how Windows works, or what would make it better then another OS (specifically Mac).

Great read - thanks for posting it. I definitely agree with what you've said - and it hardly makes sense on what is behind their given reason. I want to download podcasts OTA. I don't want my entire life to revolve around syncing with iTunes - the more I can do without connecting a cable to my laptop the better. I mean that's the point of the "mobile" device!

I just don't understand this latest rash of horrible decisions made by Apple regarding this type of application - and I wish they would stop making the decision for me if something is useless or not.

The more that this kind of stuff happens the more I am inclined to go Open Source Software 100%. Put Ubuntu/Fedora on my laptop and get an Android based phone. This kind of stuff really is starting to sour my love affair with Apple.

Michelea,
I don't think that the podcasts were tied to iTunes since all it is doing is grabbing the rss feed from the website. Remember, the app was also going to allow plus members to log in and they don't have the feeds in the iTunes store.

I think that the major issue will be what Apple decided to do with what they will do with the Digg and Mobility Today applications. If they decided to keep them, then they are really being hypocritical about the whole process (and we know that they don't have a problem getting rid of apps that were already in the store). However, if they take those two apps out of the store, then there is less of a case to be made about the GSPN app.

This isn't to say that I think that Apple is in the right here because I don't. A pretty big Mac developer, Rogue Amoeba, has had major problems getting into the store as well. The whole situation is quickly becoming a farce.

Can you distribute the app via the podcast rss or is that the same as jailbreaking it? I'm not sure if programs have to sync directly from the app store part of iTunes.

Actually these apps are NOT redundant because I currently cannot update podcasts on the fly. A streaming app is a perfect solution to this issue. It is always annoying to me to have to miss out on listening to a show simply because A. I cannot download away from my one allowed sync computer and B. I cannot download via wifi.
There would not be a need for these apps IF itunes allowed the functionality that people crave. There is however, a genuine want and need for these apps. I would download an app like this for every podcast that I listen to if it were available.

Apple does lack consistency... Which is unfair...

I think that Apple wants to release their own app for people to subscribe to podcasts...

But really what apple should have done is listed what applications they would put up on the apps store and the apps they would reject..

Cliff has wasted a lot of money if Apple doesn't take up the app...

Its enough to make your blood boil

This is another example of Apple acting just as any other corporation would do, to protect their own interests at the expense of what's right. It's time for the Apple fanboys and girls to admit that yes, Apple makes great products, but they can be just as insensitive to their users as any other company.

My main beef is that there are two apps in the store that are the SAME EXACT app as mine. The same guy developed those who developed mine.

As for being able to side-step, the only way to do it is to push it out on the Jail Broken Community. I'm not comfortable with suggesting people void their warranty just to be able to stream my podcasts.

Beyond podcasters, I imagine there are a TON of applications out there that we are not getting because Apple doesn't like them.

Just publish some darn guidelines so we can make sure not to throw hundreds and thousands out the window to have the stuff developed. That's my other main beef.

I can see where you are coming from: The fact that apple is blacklisting is indeed a problem.

But I can also see their side. Redundancy can cause some problems in their world. (As it has shown in many many issues with PC). So they may be either trying to avert a future problem, or they have tested things like this and found problems.

But then again, I am just playing devils advocate. You should be able to publish your apps...can you do it any other way? Kinda side step them?

Congrats Cliff and Steph! I've been one of your faithful 'lurkers'/listeners from the beginning. I remember downloading one of your episodes about Lost and then having to go back and listen to about 15 episodes all in a row in 1 week. From there, I was hooked to all of your podcasts. Thanks for all the great work you produce! You have encouraged and entertained me many many days.

p.s. I would become a plus member if I could, but right now all of my expenses are going towards school. Keep up the great work & don't quit because I hope to become a plus member eventually.

Congrats,
Sharon

Cliff, has it been that long? Wow. I can't believe it. I am so proud to be one of the people who listened to your first podcast.

I bet that you don't I remember how we found each other.

I started watching the first season of LOST in Octoboer 2005. Around November, I was so intringued with the show that I googled LOST. Your blog showed up and I made a comment to your entry. The rest is history.

My friend, if you need to toot your horns, go for it. You certainly deserve it. You don't know how proud I am of you. And you know that I am spreding the word out there for you.

Incredible! When it comes to podcasts you want shows that are 1) rich in content 2) consistent 3) high quality. GSPN meets all those requirements and adds a great community as well! Keep moving forward.

Cliff that is awesome. I know I only started listening to your podcasts about a month ago, but Congrats on 1000. It will take me forever to get 1000 at www.onsportsnetwork.com but it is something you should be proud and happy of. You do not come off as someone who would brag, so it doesn't come across like you are tooting your own horn.

Well said, Cliff! There are many versions of the same application already (tip calculators, for example). If podcasters want to create an iPhone app to provide a customized listening/viewing experience, then why not? To approach this from another perspective, what is inappropriate about your type of application anyway? It's not "distributing podcasts through the App Store." It's an RSS feed reader, customized for your listeners.

Apple folks, if you are reading these comments, please reverse this decision. Cliff co-hosts a Mac user podcast (among the many he produces), and he is a great evangelist for the podcasting movement, which sells iPods and generates traffic to iTunes. Good for Apple's bottom line!

Try clearing your cache or re-booting your system. I know that flash has been real buggy in firefox lately. However, you can click to download the mp3 and listen to it after it's done downloading.

I listened to this prodcast, and went to Castblaster to check it out, as well as PodProducer, and while PodProducer looks ok, I still like Castblaster better. I saw your post in the forum on Castblaster, which was a bit on the harsh side, in my humble opinion. I too am running on Vista, and I just installed Castblaster on this computer with NO ERRORS whatsoever. I don't understand why you had the problems you did, but it might be worth doing another show to retract some of the negative things you said, as it is the actual case for many of us out here. Just a thought.

Hello Cliff:
I have been listening to your podcast for awhile and I like it. Good tips. I’ve been podcasting for about 2 years. I’ve wanted a PR-40 for awhile overtime at work and your show pushed me over the edge, I would have bought it from you but I have a close friend and he got me the $299 deal. Anyway I’ve been working really long hours and have not had a chance to use it yet but I’m dying to. Keep up the good work.
