Facebook Takes Several Months To Deny Me Admin Rights!

by Cliff Ravenscraft on March 30, 2011

Facebook changed their personal profile pages a few months back. When they did, I updated my place of employment as PodcastAnswerMan.com. They didn’t tell me that they were going to do this ahead of time, but they crated a PodcastAnswerMan.com community page for my business.

There was a link where you could click to “Request Admin Rights” to the page. I filled out a pretty ridiculous application for this access and even changed my email address to Cliff@PodcastAnswerMan.com on my facebook profile as per their instructions.

Today, SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, I get an email saying that I do not meet the requirements to take over this page. Below is a Screen Capture of the page with the email super imposed!

I mean what do I have to do here? This is simply ridiculous that they can create an environment that would give the impression that I could monitor and interact with my community through Facebook page and then lock me, the owner of my own business/brand out as Admin.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to take control of this page they created?

Hey Cliff. I have a couple of FB contacts (live human beings, not email addresses off in who only knows where). Email me and tell me what you would prefer to do with this account (and I can tell you how we have helped others deal with this issue) and I will reach out to my contacts and see what they recommend. I am sure there is a solution for this. Thanks, Brock.

This is just another strike against using Facebook as a business platform. Mainly because you don't own that platform. At least with WordPress you control the software and any platform or plugin that you utilize. Is this yet another case for businesses not to trust these third-party controlled platforms like Facebook?

I really didn't want to use it for Podcast Answer Man anyway. I've since gone in and removed my "Place of Employment" from my profile so that it no longer sends people to that page.

since this page has only 9 fans, you can simple create another page http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php and I'm sure that you will get 100s of fans easily, by just putting the link here in your website

Yep, that was what I was thinking. The bad part is I never wanted a FB Fan Page to manage in the first place. I just don't like the idea of one where people may interact with it and I have no way of getting notifications to that fact. But I may, ONE OF THESE DAYS, get around to creating such a page, change my info on my profile to point my place of employment to the new fan page and then report the other as a duplicate. But it's WAY DOWN LOW on my list of priorities. :)

Actually Cliff, since they made their last update to the Pages, you now get notified of every comment posted to your fan page. I was very annoyed in the past when I'd check my page after a week and see a number of comments that I didn't even know were there. Now, I get an email alert whenever someone posts. That change has made Fan Pages much more beneficial. You can change it in your notification settings.

Yes, I do love that they now send email notifications of comments and posts on the fan pages. This is a welcomed change. However, there is still a desire for me to be strategic in the various places I choose to put my brand online. I currently have so many other items on my list of priorities above a FB Page. We'll see. :)

Cliff. I wouldn't dismiss the idea of creating a Fan page too soon. I created one for my site and found that it brought in a large audience I never knew existed. I know you have a personal presence on Facebook, but a fan page is a whole different thing. It allows people to "Like" the PodcastAnswerman fan page without having to necessarily "friend" you. Plus Facebook puts a friend limit of 5000. Fan pages have no limit. The way I use Facebook; I don't friend people unless they're really my friends. So, I don't get your news in my feed because I'm not your friend. But I don't mind Liking many fan pages. Maybe that's just me.

It's a struggle for someone who loves to work as much as I do. :)

[more margin] I totally agree with that strategy.

I have a fan page here: http://www.facebook.com/gspnCommunity I'm not opposed to the new page, it's just if I crate it, I want to make sure to be involved in that space. Don't have a lot of free time these days as it is and I'm trying to create more margin in my day to day life. :)

buy facebook.com .... anything you do not own you do not fully control.

I didn't think about that. I wonder how many Zuckerbucks I have laying around here. ;)

Ive been fighting this battle with Facebook over my church's page as well. I have done so with nothing to show for it but grief. Even Google has left me without answer. If you do figure it out, please share with the class.

My only idea is to create FB Page without the "COM" at the end for Podcast Answer Man. Then I can "REPORT" the other page as a duplicate. I can also change my "place of employment" to my newly created page. I never wanted the page in the first place. I wish they wouldn't have created this dummy one.

I'm trying to do the same thing with TrinityDigitalMedia.com. I haven't been refused yet, but it's pretty stupid that you can't get it. You own the domain afterall. That should prove it.
