Finally, Microsoft Hits One Out Of The Park!

by Cliff Ravenscraft on September 19, 2008

I must tell you, I’ve been a huge fan of the Mac v/s PC commercials. In fact, I’ve openly admitted that it is the brilliant marketing behind these ads that softened my heart toward the idea of owning my own Mac. So much so, that when I experience the frustrations of Microsoft Vista for the very first time, I tossed that desktop out of my house (Actually sold it to someone else) and went out and purchased my first Apple/Mac computer.

If you have not seen the Mac v/s PC commercials, you really should see them all!

Here is one of my favorites:

Several weeks ago, news came out that Microsoft was going to pour THREE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS into a Microsoft ad/marketing campaign. What was shocking about this story was that they announced that Bill Gates was to appear in the new ads and that they had hired Jerry Seinfeld to bring some talent to the campaign.

Here are their first two attempts at this campaign with Jerry:

Attempt 1:

Attempt 2:

It is no surprise that Microsoft said bye bye to Jerry! I must say, that regardless what hidden meaning may or may not be tucked into these commercials, it just seemed to be lost on the masses, including myself.

However, the latest advertisement coming from the Microsoft ad campaign is what we have all been waiting for. Something that deals DIRECTLY with the Mac v/s PC ad campaign. Let’s face it, Microsoft had been beaten up and knocked out in the prime time boxing match known as commercials. To this day, when we are browsing past commercials and see a Mac v/s PC commercial come on, we always back it up to the beginning to watch.

The question in my mind was… “What does Microsoft have to say about what Apple says about them in the attack ads?” Finally, Microsoft answers this very question and I must say… I think they knocked one out of the park with this latest Microsoft ad.

Take a look for yourself:

Brilliant! I love it! I think I may go and watch this one again! Tell me what you think in the comments!

Me? I’m a Mac when it comes to doing anything with video or just on the go with my MacBook laptop. I’m a PC the other 70% of the time, especially when I’m producing audio podcasts!

  • My favorite by far is "I have a beard." And then the music stops. How does that have anything to do with a PC? I don't really know.

    I'm a Mac.

I just found out the "I'm a PC" ad was partly made on a Mac.

much better than previous. Cute. But admitting that Apple kicked their butt in the ads.

was that really bill gates' email at the bottom of the screen? Or will some poor secretary get killed with spam?
  • I don't know. I think it showed some of the things that the PC does.....

I'm a PC.... I study genes.... Major laboratories run use PC's.... Windows servers are powerful...

I'm a PC... I broadcast.... I have affordable and professional sound engineering software programs that are rival that of the MAC equivalent.

I'm a PC... I turn Doooo into energy.... Windows servers are pretty powerful...

I'm a PC... I'm connected to a billion others world-wide... Okay... so are macs, but a strong suit of Windows has been it's widespread adoption.. I still watch all the tech gadget shows... "There is no mac version available" is still the most used phrase when reviewing new products.

    I'm a PC... I'm more affordable!!!!!

I think this is the first step in the right direction for them.

    HOWEVER VISTA STILL SUCKS!

I like the mac vs. pc ads. I did NOT like the Bill Gates & Jerry Seinfeld ads. The new PC ad is okaya, but I agree with Winnie, it doesn't say anything about what it does for the those people. It would be helpful to hear why they use a PC and what they like about it.t
  • The New I’m a PC adds are very good finally some thing good from Microsoft. Oh and they did do Word but except for Word Office and the aqueducts what’s Microsoft done for us

I walked by some huge video displays in Times Square today which featured the "I'm a PC" ads, for example, "I'm a PC, and a doctor". I think highlighting the omnipresence of the Windows PC does nothing to show its advantages over the Mac, which are debatable. I don't think it shows any originality on the part of Microsoft, just that they are finally reacting to Apple's very successful ad campaign. I'm not sure if it's generated as much in sales as Apple would like us to believe, but it's fun and highlights the weaknesses of "Wintel".

Now that I have used both a Mac and a PC, I think the user experience is probably better on a Mac, while the Windows "run on any PC" strategy is its greatest strength and weakness. I did have a horrible experience with Vista installed on a new laptop with the vendor's added software. When I reinstalled with "plain" Vista Home Premium and just the applications I need, Vista runs like a champ. Too bad the average user doesn't know how to do that, or want to go through the hassle.
  • The 2nd one with the family eating.. I could only take about 2 minutes of that ad. Way too long. I like the last one "I'm a PC". The Mac commercial was better IMO.
  • Joey Cagle
Good commercial. The Seinfeld ones were too long and pointless.

I'm a PC and I run Linux instead of Windows, though. :-)
  • Paul Barton
I like them all but I have a crazy sense of humor. I loved the last one especially when they show celebs and everyday people in the same light.

I don't agree with you. I don't like this direct bashing, never have. The brilliance of the Mac vs. PC ads is that they show the difference between the two, shows where they are better. These PC ads show nothing about how Windows works, or what would make it better then another OS (specifically Mac).
