I have a decent dynamic mic (Shure Beta58A) and a good mixer (Allen & Heath ZED10FX), but I still don't sound very good. Part of it is that my voice isn't great, but I think there's more to it than that, because I sound like I'm recording in a closet. I wonder if it's my technique, the settings on my mixer, or if I could really benefit from changing to a Heil PR40. I don't have much bass in my voice.

I've only done one podcast before, and there's some crackling from one of the other hosts recording into a *really* bad mic, but you can hear me on that here: http://media.seriouscompacts.com.s3.amazonaws.com/SCP-0001.mp3

Would appreciate any advice!

Hey Cliff!

I am really intrested in getting a Heil PR-40 but noticed your package here! I have one question however, do you ship to the UK?

Thanks a million, and a very merry Christmas to you and your family!

Thanks for your feedback. I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I'm very thankful that you have found options that work for you. And if anyone is reading this, please do consider all options before making your choice.

For me, I love my Heil. I've sold hundreds of them over the past three years and every single client has been 100% satisfied.

Gabe, Well, if you do get a Heil Mic, I would suggest that you get a mixer, even if just a small one, to bring your audio in from your mic . This gives you the flexibility to bring in other co-hosts in the future, as well as audio from additional sources.

Hi Cliff, I heard your podcast with Pat the other day, and I loved it. You really made my laugh when you said you worked till 3am and got up at 5am. I've done my share of that when I am starting up a business or just anytime I get so enthralled in something I forget the rest of the world. I love working for myself, and you and Pat are so encouraging.

I have a Mac Book Pro and a Mac Pro. I am planning to buy thi Heil PR40 you recommend, but I am wondering what else I need to get things off the ground and record using Garage band.

Any advice on affordable mixing equipment and any other basics I need would be awesome.

Thanks!

Christiaan,

I agree that there is a time and place for condenser microphones. However, the typical podcaster studio with no sound treatment and a computer fan, and more, running in the background, they simply are not worth the extra work that you have to go through just to get them to provide good audio.

At an average cost of $229 for the NT1-A, you could spend about $70 to $80 more and get one of the best dynamic broadcast microphones available.

If you do end up getting a Heil eventually, you may actually be SHOCKED by the sound you are able to get out of it.

Before moving to a dynamic mic, I never thought anything would be able to reproduce some of the lower frequencies of my voice. The Heil PR-40 proved me wrong and I'll never go back. ;)

Thanks for the comment on the site!

Cliff,

I use a Rode NT1-A consdenser microphone. I agree what you said about the microphone sensitivity issues from condenser microphones, but with a little practice & tuning I've gotten great results with the NT1-A. Would I recommend it for everyone? Probably not, and I'll likely get a PR40 to add to my equipment list as well. However, I really enjoy using the NT1-A and the versatility in use case and sound result that it offers. I'll send you an audio clip using it.

Hello Cliff:
I have been listening to your podcast for awhile and I like it. Good tips. I’ve been podcasting for about 2 years. I’ve wanted a PR-40 for awhile overtime at work and your show pushed me over the edge, I would have bought it from you but I have a close friend and he got me the $299 deal. Anyway I’ve been working really long hours and have not had a chance to use it yet but I’m dying to. Keep up the good work.

FYI I use the M-Audio Nova and I've been very happy with it. I got it on Ebay for around $60. Just food for thought.

Dwight,

I don't have a recommendation for you just yet. However, I'm waiting for some feedback to come in on some other folks use of their favorite mics and they may have some great feedback with some suggestions for you.

If you find a mic that you are interested in, shoot me an email at Cliff@gspn.tv and I'll see what price I can get it for you at.

Thanks
Cliff
