Sima SL-20LX Ultra Bright Video Light & Sony ECM-MS907 Demo

by Cliff Ravenscraft on May 21, 2010

I recently made two great discoveries that I believe will help me take my YouTube channel videos to the next level. The first discover is that my old Sony ECM-MS907(Affiliate Link) mic works great with my Kodak Zi8 Camera.

My second discovery is the most exciting. I found the Sima SL-20LX Ultra Bright Video Light (Affiliate Link) for approximately $30 on Amazon.com. This thing contains 36 Ultra Bright LED lights that do a terrific job of casting out shadows from my face when I’m shooting in low light situations.

My Video Review of the Sima Light & Sony Mic:

Best Buy For The Win Video:

  • This is very very very cool Cliff! I've been trying to find a solution for the lack of light in our home. It's CRAZY dark in here. It's kept me from doing video, because the lighting is really bad. I think this will do the trick! I'm so excited!

I think I'm also going to purchase the LumiQuest ProMax Mini Softbox to take the edge off (you know...soft lighting for the ladies ;) )

Now I need a solution for when I'm on skype on my Macbook...maybe I can somehow attach the light somewhere around my Macbook....we'll see.

Thanks for sharing! This totally rocks!

I recorded a video this weekend using the Audio-Technica ATR-35S Lavalier Microphone, which is $29 with the Zi8, you can check out the way it sounds here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7Mw1krkqec There was a bunch of wind and it did great!
  • Thanks for recommending the light. I just received mine today from Amazon and it's charging. I didn't realize you can't use the light while it's charging. Has that been a problem for you? And have you found the listed usage time of 45-60 minutes between charges to be accurate? Thanks!
  • I haven't noticed an issue at all. But heck, for the price you could buy 8 of these things and have them all charged and it would still be less expensive than some of the alternatives. ;)

I think you'll like it! Let me know how it works out for you.
  • Thanks for the tip on the Sima Video light. I've been looking for that one light that will illuminate my subject for green-screen chromakey work at http://koala.catholiccreativity.net.

One question: does it come with any other type of mount than the one shown above? I'm afraid that won't work with my current setup.

    Thanks a bunch, Cliff
  • It does not come with another mount, but the connections are standard mounting connections, so any brackets for video cameras will work.
  • Now this is interesting, just last week I noticed the same kind of thing, but its a black dot. Pretty big, so that I thought there was a very small fly (smudged) on my lens. But after cleaning the lens, resetting the camera, its still there. I bought the Zi8 via Amazon.de. Not sure I can get this replaced that easily, but I am not really convinced its permanent.

Love the videos as always Cliff!
  • Hope you get it resolved Lee. Kodak does have a one year warranty on the camera. For the price, we really can't complain too much right? Heck, here in the states, it's dropped down to $159.
  • Great review, Cliff. I've had similar good service at my Best Buy in Deerfield Township.

And thanks for sharing about that light. Getting light in FRONT of your face can sometimes be a challenge. My issues have been Don's office is on the other side of my desk so it would get in his way, and now, I face a wall. But it may still be good for my professional kit when I record clients. Easy setup is always a plus!

  • I am loving this video light and plan to get a lot of use out of it this weekend!
