479 – Why Being Authentic Matters

by Cliff Ravenscraft on December 9, 2016

In college, I was a theatre minor. In acting classes, they teach you that regardless what is going on in your real life, you simply must put it aside when you are on the stage. You are there to perform for the audience and you are expected to “play the character” that is prescribed for the production.

Every now and then, it’s easy for us, as podcasters, to feel like we need to “put on a performance” for our audience. I understand the need for someone, like myself, to build a professional reputation to represent my business well. However, I feel that it is important that we don’t lose touch of the importance of authenticity.

In this week’s episode, I share a few emails that reminded me just how valuable it is when I’m just being myself behind the microphone, sharing my authentic journey, week after week.

  • Many podcasts out there teach business and entrepreneurship but yours is one of the only ones that regularly reflects on the impact and journey of podcasting. Thanks for episodes like these!!

  • Tank you Josie. I am so honored to have you join me on the journey!

  • Thank you Cliff! I thought the clip from the Father’s podcast was so enlightening! I make videos for YT and will put off filming for weeks because I look tired or my grey hair is peeking through. The truth is, my grey hair is visible 2 out of every 6 weeks. I have grey hair and I don’t care!! It seems to bother other people though!
I listen to you for lots of reasons. I found you through JLD a long time ago. I like your podcasting advice, yes, but I love to hear about your journey overall. You may not have had the same experience in this area, but for me, being a follower of Jesus can be very isolating. I love to listen to intelligent business people that also happen to have faith, for no other reason than to be validated that I am not stupid. I know I’m not stupid, but it’s really not cool to have faith here. I’m told I’m crazy on a regular basis by my family, and I’m keep to myself! Once people hear I go to church, I’m judged and ridiculed. My church community is quite small, and I have not met many business people yet.
Hearing you speak openly about your faith makes listening to your business advice, processes, all the more exciting to me. I’m reminded that there are lots of us out there….and I understand why some business leaders choose not to talk about their faith, and I’m completely supportive of that decision too. I love listening to lots of different people, and I’m not concerned at all with whether they have faith, but when I find someone that I really like AND they have faith, it’s like I’m part of a special underground club.
Thanks for making your newsletter start from Week 1 when you sub. Genius! I missed out on subscribing straightaway and I am thrilled that I haven’t missed any Podcast Answer Man gold.

  • Karyn, Thank you so much for sharing what you enjoy about this podcast. In fact, I’m copying your comment above and putting it down as a “potential future topic” for this podcast. I think an episode devoted to being a person of faith in the online community would be worthy of doing.

Have you ever heard episode 371 of this podcast titled “How Do I Balance My Business Life and My Faith?” If not, you can listen at http://podcastanswerman.com/371.

I’m honored to have you as a member of the “underground club.” 😉
